- Post subject: The Best Band in History?
|
This may sound like a stupid topic, specially in this site. But apart from everyone has his own taste in music, everyone likes different bands or types of music; there's always a general understanding in most topics as of whom is the best, or at least a top 3.
Like in football, even if you dont like i,t Pele and Maradona are well know as the best of the sport.
I think for music should be possible to determine outside of your own personal criteria, who is the best band in history in the eyes of non-music fanatics in the World. _________________ "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming"

Bad analogy. Music is nothing like football. In football we have some clear criteria to distinguish between a good player and a bad one. A second striker who can dribble his direct defender most of the time or pass the ball and create chances for other players is a better second striker than those who easily lose the ball. There are no such criteria in music.

Of course it's possible to have your own personal favourite band, but looking at it objectively, The Beatles are the best band in history. Especially compared to children who are unsuccessfully trying to play the violin (then again we once had The Poe who might've preferred the children)! _________________ "The Beatles, the greatest band known to mankind." - Bismah Mughal

Music is not trying to achieve sth. Music is created for other people's enjoyment. Good music is not people trying to play instruments and achieving. Good music is sth that can give people enjoyment. Kids trying to play the violin and making dissonant noises certainly enjoy doing it and their grandpa may enjoy it too because he may find it cute. If you want to prove that the Beatles are the best music band then you would try to convince human beings because if you play Beatles for trees, they wouldn't tell you if they found it any good. So exactly because of this dependence of greatness of music on human beings and their mental reaction (no human beings--> no enjoyment--> no evaluation) you would never be able to transcend the fucking mind of the listener and give objective statements. You're always bound to talk about your enjoyment and your reaction because you don't have access to other people's minds and the levels of enjoyment they get from different stuff. You can argue for one artist being better than the others but that will not change the inherent value of the music of that artist because there is no such value; because claiming that there is entails that such a value is independent of listener's mind and we just showed that such a thing is not possible. So you arguing for an artist is just a way of communicating the values that you find in their music, something that others may not find and you cannot criticize them for not finding it because it isn't there; it is just in your mind.

It's been a long time since we had an objective vs. subjective trainwreck. If I had an artists chart, the Beatles would be at the top, but I agree with tekin, you can't compare this to football. There's a certain amount of ambiguity in sports too, but not nearly as much.

In the social groups I've been within, if I had asked them, I'm pretty sure most people would've agreed on enjoying The Beatles rather than any other band, and with this in mind trying to be as little influenced as possible of my own opinion, I'm pretty sure it's the same in almost every other country (or universe for that matter). The Beatles have just the right amount of diversity, emotion and quality in their music to appeal to almost everyone. Naturally, there are always the occasional naysayers who dislike or claim to dislike The Beatles, but I stand by my point of The Beatles being the group behind the most universally appealing music and therefore I believe you can call them the best band of all time. _________________ "The Beatles, the greatest band known to mankind." - Bismah Mughal
