Elton John - despite his diva like behaviour at airports... I guess Billy Joel's domestic violence knocks him down a peg as well.

Dude, you want punishment?

Elton John is not punishment.

Billy Joel, though, not so sure....

Billy Joel by a lot. Both had their heyday in the 70s - I think Joel lasted a bit longer since Glass Houses came out around 1980-81 I think. I only like a handful of Elton's 80s songs, and just a couple of Joel's past 1982 (We Didn't Start the Fire and Downeaster Alexa). But overall I think Billy Joel has a much stronger catalogue than Elton with masterpieces such as The Piano Man, She's Always A Woman, She's Got a Way, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me, Big Shot, Honesty, My Life, amongst many others. I've really only cared for a small selection of Elton John's music like Daniel, Rocket Man, I Guess That's Why the Call it the Blues...some others I guess, but not a lot.

Both faded hard after the first decade, though, even if they both continued to put out music. Billy Joel has the excuse that he was hard into the cocaine...what's Elton's excuse? Laughing

Elton John was a big cocaine user in the 70's, but he still was cranking out great songs. But in Billy's defense, he writes his own lyrics. This one is a tie for me, but I voted for Billy Joel because I want to keep the voting closer.

Billy Joel's music has, for me, sounded worse with each passing decade. He sounds like he's trying too hard all the time...trying to be "the piano man" (which got sappier as time went by), trying to be the diverse 50's guy, blues guy, and rocker (which he's not, in all cases), trying to be heavy (which he most painfully is not), and trying to be, more than anything, ELTON JOHN (which he will never be). The songs that people seem to love the most..."Piano Man", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" (or as I call it..."Nails On An Italian Chalkboard"), "My Life", "Only A Woman", are the ones I really dislike the most.

Anyone find it strange that in the godawful "Wer Didn't Start The Fire", the thing that sets him over the edge and makes him say "I can't take it any more" is....cola wars?

Elton John. Any day of the week. His catalog is stronger, his hits are better, his entire being is better. Billy Joel is simply the imitator.

IMO Billy Joel made some good music in the 80's. Yes, he did try several different genres of music during this time. But when he was being himslef, he was still great as on songs like this from 1983.

This one is from 1982
