Yeah, most of the lyrics on Permanent Waves aren't even sci-fi-related. I was more just being shocked at the fact that anyone would consider their debut their best.
Okay, everyone's entitled to his/her own opinion, but...
What.
Just my opinion. The third rate sci-fi was cool when I was 15. Got old by the time I got out of high school. I find Neil Peart and his writing irritating. They did get better...they dropped the sci-fi novel thing, and Geddy Lee went down an octave so he didn't sound so much like Donald Duck. I get their lyrics...I just don't like 'em. They are great players...but I just don't like 'em.
Hey, there are people here who don't like Radiohead. And Pink Floyd. And The Beatles. Me, I just don't care for Rush.

We can't all like every band...
Well yeah, I'm certainly no big Radiohead or Beatles (aside from Abbey Road) fan. And don't get me wrong, I respect your opinion whatever it may be, I just thought it was interesting is all. I personally think the lyrics on their first album are much more poorly written and cliche than any of their sci-fi lyrics, but that may just be me. I mean, I enjoy parts of their first album, as well, it's just that I have a hard time listening to it and thinking "this is Rush".
I've never heard about this band. Are they any good?
Have you really never heard of them?
Anyway, yes, they are very talented musicians and have written some of the best progressive rock compositions I've ever heard. They have 18 (soon to be 19) albums that display an enormous range, and if you're interested in getting into them just let me know what kind of music you like and I can probably recommend something of theirs you'd like

Depends. Do you like prog or math rock? Do odd time signatures get you hot under the coller?
Ah, prog rock - I see. I'm a great fan of the Canterbury scene (Gong, Soft Machine) and space rock (Pink Floyd, Hawkwind) movements, while the symphonic stuff such as Yes, Genesis, ELP etc. definitely isn't my thing. Where are Rush placed in the prog area?
To answer this, like I said, their music covers an enormous range. If the Canterbury/space rock scene is what you're into, I'd recommend some of their stuff from the late 70s, particularly 2112 and Hemispheres. I'd recommend giving their 20-minute magnum opus 2112 a listen and seeing what you think.
I listened to the 2112 album. It sounds like Hawkwind, but the psychedelia and humor is replaced with annoying vocals (omg that singer), lack of composing skills and just plain medicority. A Passage to Bangkok had a nice blues riff, but that's all that grabbed my attention - the "epic" title track simply wasn't very epic (I failed the see the similarity with the Canterbury Sound as well).
Sorry for sounding harsh - in fact this album did one very good thing for me: it made me want to blast Space Ritual out very loud.

Lol, well if you thought the vocals were annoying on 2112 (which even I wouldn't entirely deny) then you might like some of their later stuff better. His voice did get lower and more mature over time. If you get a chance I'd recommend checking out Moving Pictures (particularly Tom Sawyer and Limelight). It's still got some elements of space rock (albeit not as much) and Geddy's voice is substantially toned down.
And I'm afraid that none of their albums are quite jazzy enough to bear too much resemblance to the Canterbury scene.
