Decent album, but generally underwhelming. I really don't see how it even holds a finger to Automatic.

Give it time. I thought this too, the first time. It's now my favorite by them (on par with Lifes Rich Pageant, maybe). It clicked with me after I had listened to The Replacement's Tim, for some reason.

Stunning stunning record, absolutely fantastic, I can't see it leave my chart anytime soon, except for another R.E.M. record.

I'll continue the praise. Incredible debut, so many great songs. I really like Stipe's singing on the record. He makes the lyrics difficult to understand, but I think that mystery makes the record more appealing. It's not my favorite record by them, that would be Reckoning, but it's a 10 in my book and their 2nd best record.

One of my favourite R.E.M. albums. I couldn't say for sure which I like the most, but this one definitely wouldn't be far from the top of that list. An excellent debut.

I agree... except I know which one is my favourite - Monster.

Well, I can't say for sure which my favourite is (there are three or four which I think are at a very similar level of greatness), but if pushed I'd probably say Lifes Rich Pageant.

Can't believe it's now thirty years old! I still love their early stuff. This album is number 34 on my favourite albums of the 1980's and Talk About The Passion is in my Top 100 favourite songs of all time. Excellent album!
