It's very influential and even more, it has influenced bands that I love.
The thing is, I hate this album with an undying passion. I don't know why, I just do. I've tried 4 or 5 times and each time I just hate it more. It just drags on and on and by the time I finish it, I wonder what my life has come to. The fact that it's "weird" or "Challenging" isn't why. I just hate this thing. Now, it's far from the worse album ever, but it's the album I hate the most, beating American Idiot (which is a truly godawful album) for that illustrious title.

What I think it is is that the album as a whole isn't very influential...it's tiny little elements here and there - a certain guitar hook or a particular vocal stylization on a particular song. There's a little for everyone if you're really into music and are listening to individual pieces of sound in the songs. But taken as a whole...it's hard to even call it music. It's a cacophony of sounds that is so random as to be completely unappealing to most people. And it's not a "challenge" - the songs really just aren't musically good in the aggregate, even if individual parts of them can be inspirational.
