if I only listen to one disc, it's either 1 or 3. Never 2, which is definitely the weakest.

This, this, this.

I think it's not only too long, but just plain inferior to her first too releases. There are parts I love, but there are parts I really don't care for (although I'd say there are more parts I love). Overall I really like it, but I make love to her previous ones, so that's somehow a kind of disappointment.

That said, '81 is, like, the jammiest of my jams.

A serious contender for my number one spot, and of course, my favourite Newsom album.

It's length is perhaps it's main appeal to me, and is partly why the album feels so rewarding. I could only ever listen to it all the way through, because it's all connected - you just need to listen to the lyrics.

Joanna Newsom provides her strongest vocal performance, sounding much more hush and thoughtful, rather than her usually quirky twang which many of you love - but here she's more human. Whilst her debut felt nostalgiac and reeked of childhood memories, and Ys opens up much like a fantastical story book - this album is about growing as a person, and as an independent woman. It's an album about self-discovery and growing independence, being album to stand on your own to feet and enter the world as your own person - there's something that hits home about that.

If movies can be 2 hours long, then this record is more than worth my time, it's not an episode, it's a novel. When I start listening to it, I'm devoted, and I'm settled.

Almost every song completely holds my attention, and the instrumentation here is nothing short of gorgeous, almost dancing around her voice at times, and sweeping at the saddest moments. Not only is it a near perfect record, but I'm almost stunned that someone could create something so focused and so consistent last for that long, in such a limbo period of her career.

It may well be my number one some day.
