A very recent discovery for me, and a very good one. And that comes from someone who used to be very suspicious about hard rock or metal.

Popularly thought of as the birth of metal. A debatable statement, but not one I really take issue with. Not Sabbath's heaviest, but definitely their bluesiest. That simple use of the tritone in the title track is one of the most evil sounding things in all of music.

The following is from da book.

It's not often that you have a personal story about a hugely influential classic rock album, but I shockingly have one here. I still remember my brother picking this up on CD at the local Fry's Electronics, particularly because of a cute voluptuous girl at the counter named Christie. Due to me recently getting dumped around that time, I was sorta desperate there, and even though I never saw Christie again, her cleavage taught me that there were more girls in the world than Hannah. I was gonna be alright.

When my mom saw that my brother bought four CD's with dad's money, he decided to return the others (including one from Testament and Exodus, sadly enough). Fortunately, he was smart enough to hold onto this.

But onto the album. We all know that Black Sabbath's debut "invented" heavy metal, but there were lots of records claiming that title early on (remember Blue Cheer?). So really, what makes this different than all those different "alternative blues rock" records?

Well, this shadowy cornerstone called Black Sabbath actually has something that doesn't just transcend metal, but 99% of music in general.

You see, throughout the history of recorded music, there have been two general ways to make a rock record, both being great techniques. One is through lean, minimalist, catchy songwriting; the other is through euphoric atmosphere.

This is the only album I've EVER listened to that is among the top of both of those at once. One moment you'll be head-banging to "NIB"'s legendary riff; the next, you'll have your head fall like a brick onto the ground in astonishment of Rodger Bain's utter terror (something that I always wished was more apparent on Paranoid)

But beyond that, it's just so rare to find an album where EVERY song tears the house down in it's entirety. The title track scares the heck out of you on first listen; "The Wizard" shows you some of the best drumming in heavy metal; "NIB" is simply one of the greatest riffs in all of rock music; "Wicked World" gives you a super-fun reprieve from

Which Testament and Exodus albums were they?
