How about a list of Best By Year? A person can put no more than one album per year in a chart sorted chronologically. It could count, maybe 5 points per album, and be available at level 5 or level 6.

Actually that's not a bad idea but i think it's a little "unfair".For example take a look at 1991.There are loveless,nevermind,Achtung Baby and ten and many more albums.So you should choose one.let's say you choosed loveless,so loveless had a competition with nevermind and beated it.
Now take a look at 1982.Full of pop albums and some good ones.and let's say you choosed The Number Of The Beast by iron maiden.
Now you are giving both loveless and NOTB 5 points.While loveless had a way harder way to get in the chart.and that's not fair.is it ?

I think sort of thing is better in a custom chart.
