I can't listen to this anymore. The emotional blackmail that is 'The Kids' is too difficult for me to take. Why the fuck did he have to add those cries.
I used to think this was his best, I know tend to prefer Transformer because I can listen to it and feel less painfully involved.

The solo albums are so far off even from Loaded. And the songs he recycled from Velvets are always superior in the original incarnation.

I enjoy all the Velvets' albums and place them on equal footing, thinking Loaded is just as good as their debut or what my be my all-time favorite from them, White Light/White Heat; however, I no longer feel the need to ever put on a full Velvets album these days (just burned out, I guess), yet I still love listening to Berlin, The Blue Mask, and New York (and occasionally Metal Machine Music for kicks). I feel the Velvets were great at straddling the line between avant-garde and pop, creating a great breadth of feeling and highly listenable tunes, yet Lou Reed's solo career saw him explore the extremes, and there is no such angst, regret, resentment, or loathing in the Velvets as is present on Berlin or The Blue Mask. Berlin is a current favorite of mine from him because Mark Kozelek stated it was such a large influence on his music last time I saw him. By no means a perfect album, at times not even a listenable album, but an album of great utility (in reinforcement, understanding, inspiration) to the heavy hearts.

Well it may as well not exist and it was done by a different band.

I know that this album is often called one of the saddest albums of all time, but to me the sadness sounds very forced and fake. He's obviously trying to be depressing and edgy with the baby crying noises but he just comes across as a pretentious tryhard. I much prefer The Velvet Underground and Transformer.

I used to love Berlin. I used to think of it as the day after Transformer when all the makeup's been taken off. But, you're right. I listened to it today and sadly thought it was just pretentious dreck. The lyrics to Men of Good Fortune are actually laughable.
Try Street Hassle! I was addicted to it last year.

Dear Lou,
Please forgive me. I know not what I said. I am not worthy. I do love this album. I do. I do!
(although let’s be honest, Lou. The lyrics on MOGF are completely over the top especially with your nihilistic rejoinders about not “caring at all.” Pretty rich coming from a kid from Long Island, ya know.)
I especially love The Kids - the aural equivalent of a Cassavetes flick. I know you like him.
Anyways, hope we’re cool. Thanks for listening. I hope it’s fun up there. Not that’d you care at all.
Love always,
me
This album is The Wall of sadcore albums! An immersive conceptual masterpiece. That rare album that creates a world all of its own.
