I don't know how you can be so simple to where you can't appreciate a melodically and rhythmically complex and beautiful blend of funk, blues, hard rock and hip hop. Frusciante is at his best, unleashing some of the best guitar solos of the 90s with a variety of dense and abrasive guitar sounds, plus a handful of soft beautiful ballads... Oh and not to mention he was twenty fucking one when he wrote those parts. Flea learns to slow down his punk funk bass style into more slow grooves, making him a much more appreciable bassist. Chad smith is flawless on the drum kit. Kiedis is hit or miss admittedly, as he's always been. His vocal delivery and sound great, but some lyrics make you roll your eyes.

I loved this album when if came out. There's no doubt that Flea, Frusciante and Smith were all exceptional musicians blending loads of styles into something fresh, but I now have a hard to listening to Kiedis.

I still think "Breaking The Girl" is the best song on the album.

Sorry Ian, but I don't like this. First and foremost, I'm not at all a funk-rock type of guy, with very few exceptions. 'Give It Away' is typically the kind of song I can't bear: it's funk you can't dance to but are supposed to, what? Pogo to? They're probably all excellent musicians, but I'm not a musicologist, or a musician even, and don't care much about musicianship, I'm just not the right target for the kind of feeling this band wants to conjure up, it leaves me cold. I will, however, admit to more than tolerate some of their ballads ('I Could Have Lied' and 'Under the Bridge'), even if the only song I really truly like from them is not on this album (it's 'Scar Tissue', very nice feel on the guitar on this one).

All in all, Frusciante's solo work is far more interesting.
