Super funky record, I'd say it's more accessible than Dr. Dre's The Chronic in terms of very funk-influenced rap, but if you want to get into the super classics first, then definitely listen to the Dre one, you can't go wrong with it either. Both are pieces of absolute fun.
It's supposed to be psychedelic, I'm not too sure but the guy's got memorable voice and flow, and it's IMO very soulful, like with organs and pianos, and sung parts. Touching too.
A must-have tbh, very poppy but never strays too far from being a real hip-hop record. Biggie raps like no other, it's really the perfect balance between pop and rap. It was the first album from the genre I really fell in love with.
I could have rec'd A Tribe Called Quest for some jazzy hip-hop, but as much as I like them, I've never really been a fan, so here's this instead. It's not just jazz-influenced, it's basically jazz with rap. Super smooth and laid back, I truly wish I had listened to that back then when I was discovering the genre.
Also obviously Nas and Beastie Boys are great recs. Illmatic is pretty serious, evocative, and just absolutely amazing, and for the Beasties I'd start with their debut, not only because I prefer it, but because it's very punky, it shows a pretty different side of rap.
Lots of other things obvs, I've just taken into account my own experience and tastes. Hope you find your way! If you really start to dig the genre, I'd recommend you listen to the hip-hop tourney noms, most of them are very good as far as I recall. I'm even totally OK with giving up on one of my noms for you to participate, it would be great fun.
