Predictions for the upcoming Charli XCX album Sucker?
This one is potentially very interesting, being quite tricky to predict. Her debut did get Best New Music designation but as Pitchfork's recent interview with Charli states, that was "three Charli XCXs ago".
She has increased her profile and popularity quite a bit this year, perhaps too much for Pitchfork's tastes? I notice that they've have not been reviewing the new tracks that are being released to promote Sucker, which is not an encouraging sign I suppose.
I predict either a 7.3 if they just find it okay (most likely) OR a high eight with Best New Music designation if they really like it. If it get's Best New Music, I predict 8.8+ as to capitalise on her increasing popularity and mass appeal potential.
Been reading through The Pitch after the recent articles on Sun Kil Moon and Ariel Pink and am convinced it's a legitimized mass media outlet for tumblr feminism.

Just read the Ariel Pink op-ed, and this line made me laugh:
Quote:
Art that cannot be criticized serves no real purpose.

does anyone else find that the albums that just miss Best New Music (7.8-8.2) tend to be more interesting, or am I just trying to avoid p4k drone status while still ultimately falling under their powerful sway????? _________________ My top songs of the 2010s

Haven't heard the new Theo Parrish yet (though, knowing Theo, it's all but guaranteed a spot in my Top 10 of the year), but based on what I know of his previous material - which is vast swathes of - the Pitchfork review seems extremely fair and on-the-nose. Also, I don't think I saw the word 'hypnotic' used, which I find pretty much impossible to avoid when describing Theo's music, so props to the author for being a more imaginative, less predictable man than I (not that it takes much). But yeah, take mine and Pitchfork's advice and listen to Theo Parrish; the man's a god. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

Just downloading it now. Never heard anything by him before though, hoping for a bit of an adventure. _________________ Doubles & Conch
It seems like we're having quite the strong January this year. I know personally that the Bjork, Sleater-Kinney( the only one I've had the chance to listen to in full so far), Natalie Prass and Aphex Twin releases make January of this year more interesting and exciting than the first six months of 2014! ๐ _________________ Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
Pitchfork seems to be one of the better review sites out there, with a nice mix of youth and intelligence, but I still have my gripes. Some of the bigger ones:
- Rating an album to the first decimal place in a ten-point scale is silly, even from an individual perspective.
- "Best New Music" seems to be strongly correlated with hype and I suspect it's more about increasing traffic to the site than anything else.
- Reviewers often come off as pretentious, using big words and complicated phrasing to express simple ideas.
- As with most music review sites, they cast their net too wide and try to appeal to too many demographics at once. The result of this is that they often come off as making a clumsy argument for objectivism.
Still, it could be much worse (see Rolling Stone).
