Rush is my favorite band, so I'll be proud to waive the neckbeard atrocity flag forever.
However, this album in particular (as an ALBUM) doesn't deserve many of the accolades it receives. The title track is obviously brilliant. A shining moment for the band and the genre. A Passage to Bangkok is a nice follow up to begin side two, but pretty much everything after that is somewhat lackluster. The next 6 Rush studio albums after this one are all much better.
As brilliant as Lifeson's guitar work is on 2112 the song, his performance on songs like Tears and Lessons bores me. The lyrics aren't anything I try to recite either (though Neil Peart is nearly as brilliant a lyricist as he is drummer). People don't always take that into account with 2112 (THE ALBUM). They just praise the title track and think that merits its selection as the best, or one of the best Rush albums. It doesn't. Rush has too many quality albums, like Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves that play like a dream all the way through to call this the best Rush record. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
