Oh it's not that bad - just despise coloured vinyl in general. It was a better option than the cola cube coloured version.

Does the hatred stem from the fact that its gimmicky and crass commercialism, or do you think the quality of sound is different?

Regular (black) records are pressed with carbon, which is in part what makes them dark black, but this is mainly to increase the durability of the records, and to allow them to hold up after years and years. In colored vinyl, this is replaced with dyes, to give the record it's color, while decreasing it's longevity and durability. In most colored records this is audible in the sound too, as the record produces a thinner sound. So yes, the sound quality is different, and given the choice you should always pick the black record, unless you don't give a fuck about how long your record lasts or how it sounds.

Fuck, I should've known this, especially since I want to be a chemist (well, biochemist). But regarding the sound, I have no idea how you would notice the difference, even with high quality headphones.

Surely you would after listening to the record a fair few times, though?

Perhaps, also maybe if I actually used headphones when listening to vinyl instead of being a liar and saying I have used them before for vinyl listening.

Lying is very naughty. But yes, depending on what your deck/amp are like, listening to vinyl through a decent pair of open headphones can (literally, if you'll pardon the pun) open your ears up to lots of nuances you just don't get on an mp3. It'll also pick up any imperfections very easily. I swear by cleaning my records before and after a play to get rid of the static and fluff, which can help of course. It's all part of the ritual that's made me go back to vinyl after years and years (well, that and finally having a music room/two-tier bookcase to store it all in).

I dare say, this may be the most informative i have ever seen this thread get! Thanks, fellas!

In my jubilation upon discovering the Lucero news I posted earlier, i took a trip to the store to help kickstart my cousins budding vinyl collection. (records make the best gifts!) While shopping a found a few things for myself as well.

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan

Early pressing in really really nice condition, though i paid for it.

and

Houses Of The Holy by Led Zeppelin

also in great shape but for less than $10 which is way more my speed.

Irie indeed - well worth trying to hunt down Live Loving, Wicked A Go Feel It & Dancehall Showcase Vol.2 if you like a healthy dose of Sugar.

I have just picked up 20 LPs this morning, the majority off Gumtree for a quid each. Info to follow once I've sifted through it all ๐Ÿ˜

So just had a chance to go through today's haul and have picked up some corkers:

From the monthly Guildford record fair:

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground

Mid-80s German press

George Best by The Wedding Present

To complete my early WP collection on vinyl - and jolly nice first edition on Reception too. MSS would be proud

Blacks And Blues by Bobbi Humphrey

Jazz-flute anyone? Lovely textured cover an' all on Blue Note - interestingly I've been looking to buy the repress, but to find an original was a nice surprise

From down the road at Howard from the Vapors' People Records:

Three Piece Suit by Trinity

Howard's such a dude. He's reduced all his reggae represses to a fiver (must be a Guildford thing). Shame I've cleared most of it out before now, but got this to plug a gap

Then, from a nurse who was selling her uncle's collection for a pound a pop on Gumtree:

Speak And Spell by Depeche Mode

and why not. Got Some Great Reward as well

Across 110th Street by Bobby Womack & J.J. Johnson

Original UA UK issue. Had some writing on the sleeve but as it was laminated I've just got that off with lighter fluid

A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles

Yep. A Russian pressing. Had to get it for comedy value. Misses off When I Get Home as supposedly was seen as a bit risquรฉ by the Soviet censors. Those bleedin' Scousers and their 'suggestable erotic allusions'

Fulfillingness' First Finale by Stevie Wonder

Never spent more than ยฃ1 on any Stevie LP, and had to carry on the trend

Brass Construction by Brass Construction

This uncle must have had funky bones. Also picked up LPs by Betty Wright and BT Express

Sugarhill Gang by The Sugarhill Gang

Canadian press of all things

and the bargain of the day...

Shakara by Fela Kuti

Worth ยฃ50. Cratedigalicious
