My discoveries per year - Music Diaries - Forums : Best Ever Albums

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Other 2004 albums I listened to:
- Panopticon by Isis (nr 28 on the overall BEA top chart of 2004): not bad but not really my thing either
- Futures by Jimmy Eat World nr 30): y best description would be: a mediocre version of Weezer.
- Medúlla by Björk (nr 31): I respect the artist very much but her albums don't do me much and this is also true for this album.

The next album to listen to is Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor.

- Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor (nr 32 on the overall BEA top chart of 2004): some of the tracks on this album like Ode To Divorce, Carbon Monoxide and Us are not bad but overall the album is not completely grabbing my attention
- Thunder, Lightning, Strike by The Go! Team (nr 33): I didn't really like this album
- Set Yourself On Fire by Stars (nr 34): I had to listen to this album via Youtube and it's a pity I can't include it in my Apple Music playlist. Maybe I'll have to try the alternative versions album Do You Trust Your Friends?. I don't really know why I like this albums: the sometimes innocent voices and lyrics, the good songs? in any cas an album I liked overall.
- Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn (nr 35): although she tries to get away from the schmalz country with a little help from Jack White, overall the album is still not really my thing.

The next album to listen to is Riot On An Empty Street by Kings Of Convenience.

Continuing story of 2004:
- Riot On An Empty Street by Kings Of Convenience (nr 37 on the overall BEA top list of 2004): really good album which sometimes a bit mellow but overall breathtakingly beautiful.
- Trouble by Ray LaMontagne (nr 39): not really my thing.
- Talkie Walkie by Air (nr 41): I must admit I'm a bit touched by this album just because of the general atmosphere but however not good enough for my personal top chart
- Bows + Arrows by The Walkmen (n 42): this one I liked very much and especially The Rat, My Old Man, The North Pole and the title track are very good.
- ...Is A Real Boy by Say Anything (nr 43): this is much less so for this one. If it would be a regular album it would be soso: with 1h22minutes it's utterly tedious, pretentious and boring
- Under My Skin by Avril Lavigne nr 44): there is nothing original about this album.

The next album to listen to is Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson.

My last contribution of albums I listened to of 2004:
- Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson (nr 46 on the overall BEA top chart of 2004): terrible album
- Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) by Slipknot (nr 47): in it's genre not bad but not really my style
- Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes by TV On The Radio (nr 48): also not really for me
- Back To Bedlam by James Blunt (nr 49): I don't understand why this is so high ranked
- Let It Die by Feist (nr 51): I quite liked the bossanova feel of the first track but the album wasn't interesting enough overall.
- Satanic Panic In The Attic by of Montreal (nr 52 and also the last album with an overall rank better than 2500): I fairly enjoyed the overall atmosphere of this album but songwise there wasn't enough quality.

And this ends my journey through 2004. Not that there were no good albums but apart from Funeral and some others, most of my favorite albums have a low overall BEA rank. I also only discovered 6 new albums in this journey really enjoyed which is not so much.

And continuing 2008 albums:
- Devotion by Beach House (nr 24 on the overall BEA top chart of 2008): not yet upto the standards of their latter albums.
- Glasvegas by Glasvegas (nr 32): Especially the first four tracks are good. After that the album becomes a bit repetitive but overall a good one.
- Cage The Elephant by Cage The Elephant (nr 34): They indeed sound a bit like the Arctic Monkeys but to my taste a bit better. just because I liked James Brown and Back Against the Wall and the other tracks were not bad either I'll include this one in my top chart
- Pretty. Odd. by Panic! At The Disco (nr 35): the Beatles reference are all over the place but somehow this album doesn't connect.
- The Airborne Toxic Event by The Airborne Toxic Event (nr 36): There are a few tracks on this album which are very good like Does This Mean You're Movin' On and especially the longer Sometime around midnight. Overall the harder songs are better than the slower ones but overall a fairly good album.

The next album to listen to is The Carter III b Lil Wayne.

Next batch of 2008 albums I listened to:
- Tha Carter III by Lil Wayne (nr 38 on the overall BEA top chart of 2008): rap and not my thing.
- Watershed by Opeth (nr 40): Burden is not bad but this album couldn' tempt me otherwise.
- Los Angeles by Flying Lotus (nr 41): to me this is wallpaper music with not really a lot of interesting stuff going on.
- Insurgentes by Steven Wilson nr 42): the more I listen to Steven Wilson, the more I become a fan of his music. I'm still in doubt about Porcupine Tree and should listen to some more albums. In any case I liked the diversity of this particular album and especially the songs which range from Pink Floyd to Radiohead appealed to me.
- You & Me by The Walkmen (nr 43): I was a bit in doubt about this album because I liked some tracks like On The Water but overall the album as a whole couldn't convince me.

The next album to listen to is The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta, a band to which I have done an effort to get into but which I don't appreciate at all. I'll see about this album...

- The Bedlam In Goliath by The Mars Volta (nr 45 in the overall BEA top chart of 2008): I know the first two albums of this band and don't like them at all and the same goes for this one. This is the quintessence of progrock in the worst sense.
- Alopecia by Why? (nr 46): Fatalist Palmistry is not bad but overall not really my thing
- Walking On A Dream by Empire Of The Sun (nr 48 ): very lightweight and absolutely not my thing
- Evil Urges by My Morning Jacket (nr 50): when I listened to the start of this album I thought this would not be a good MMJ record but the songs gradually get better near the end because I like them best when they rock like in Alumnium Park and Remnants. So this was a bit of a doubt but finally I decided to include it in my personal top chart.

Nearly at the end of 2008 with next album to listen to April by Sun Kil Moon.

- April by Sun Kil Moon (nr 51 on the overall BEA top chart of 2008): this is one of the best albums I already heard of Sun Kil Moon where soft pieces are intertwined by more forceful guitar episodes. I especially liked Light and Tonight Th Sky.
- The Fame by Lady Gaga (nr 52): completely not my thing
- Folie à Deux by Fall Out Boy (nr 53): and the same goes for this thing: very bad hair/nu-metal which tries to be artistic.
- The Hawk Is Howling by Mogwai (nr 54 and with an overall BEA rank of 2499 the last one below 2500 I will listen to of 2008): this is a good album of this Scottish band where especially Batcat rocks very hard although the whole record is instrumental.

And again a year with lots of my favorite albums not in the top 2500.

I have already listened to a few albums:
- Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons (nr 7 in the overall BEA top chart of 2009): Having heard numerous repeats of Little Lion Man on the radio I'm more than fed up with this song and to be honest also with the whole of their sound. I must admit that the banjo is not my favorite instrument and the way they use it and also the songs themselves are not really my thing.
- West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum by Kasabian (nr 10): I didn't find a lot of interesting music on this album
- Primary Colours by The Horrors (nr 11): although the songs are not always of the greatest quality this is a really interesting combination of shoegaze, goth and coldwave and I must say that I generally liked the sound and the atmosphere and some of the songs like Three Decades and I Can't Control Myself while the two longer tracks were not completely convincing. But overall a solid album.

The next album I'll listen to is Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors.

This is my second contribution for 2009 albums I listened to:
- Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors (nr 13 on the overall BEA top chart of 2009): this album is called experimental but measured with current standards I would call it dated. I didn't hear a lot of good songs either.
- It's Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (nr 14): although not the best album in the world, Fever to Tell was not bad but this one is more mediocre in my opinion. Above that there is this very tiresome voice of Karen O.
- Fever Ray by Fever Ray (nr 16): some of the tracks like If I had a Heart are not bad but overall not really striking enough.
- The Hazards Of Love by The Decemberists (nr 17): I must say I was sometimes moved by the pastoral beauty of some of the tracks but overall the concept gets a bit in the way of the songs. I might like this album better after a few listens and I will certainly come back to this but at this moment it's a no.
- Actor by St. Vincent (nr 18 ): she certainly has a kind of originality in her songs but overall this album was not enough to keep me interested a whole album.
- Man On The Moon: The End Of Day by Kid Cudi (nr 19): as you know already rap is not my thing and neither is this album.

The next album to listen to is Only Revolutions by Biffy Clyro.
