Every Friday I check out albumoftheyear.org to see if there's any albums I didn't plan on checking out that are getting good reviews. Usually nothing catches my eye but today I was intrigued by this one because of the title, which I'm pretty sure is an allusion to the terrible TV edit of The Big Lebowski, where "see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass?" is replaced by "see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?". The title doesn't have anything to do with the actual music content as far as I can tell, but it was enough to get me to check out a song and then the whole album.
I've heard a few albums this year in this vein - fuzzy folk/alt-country music and vaguely depressing/disinterested lyrics. I wasn't really impressed with any of them because they were musically bland and/or the lyrics weren't as affecting as they were trying to be. I'm happy to report this one doesn't fit either of those categories. The lyrics are at times heartbreaking and at times strangely uplifting, and the instrumentation has enough variation from track to track that it doesn't get boring. It often feels like there's something bubbling under the surface, but even when you think it's going to break into something bigger it holds back (until it finally does break through on one of the tracks near the end, spoiler alert).
Anyway, I highly recommend this if you like fuzzy folk albums with thoughtful lyrics. There's one track that sounds like Death Cab (Motion Sickness), one that sounds like a country duet (Would You Rather), and a bunch of stuff in between.
Not to be confused with the Susanne Sundfør of Ten Love Songs, although they are the same person. Reverant and haunting, with a minimal approach that stands in sharp contrast to her past work. It is not about love as we speak of it, but it is about the universe in which love thrives and dies.
Haven't even heard the new Godspeed yet but I'm excited to check this out.
Godspeed was aight (better than their last), but the new Yves Tumor is definitely a slight disappointment compared to his last effort. Personally, I was hoping he'd go in a less-ambient direction, and he did the exact opposite 🤣
Anywho, this is a pretty slick release from a Canadian R&B artist, def rec:
keep in mind that Yves Tumor thing was given away for free on soundcloud and referred to as a "compilation" by the artist. and he has signed with Warp Records now. I don't think you need to worry about him going ambient for his next major release, especially when you take his live show into consideration.
I just added this album I had heard a song from months before, but I just listened to the whole thing last night. Very cool, lowkey jazz/ambient/classical album.
