I am very glad. With all the albums I do not know that you are praising I thought I really missed something. But I do know this one and I think it is really bad. So, thank you. And by the way, I do think I could say to your face that Elvis was the King of Rock 'n' Roll. But it depends of course, on what kind of body the face sits on. I do not want to get hurt. ๐Ÿ˜„

Yeah, Green Day has since become kind of an annoyance. But on this album, they got it all right. And even if you can't stand this band, you've gotta love what Dookie is all about, and the sound of it all. You don't have to love what came in its wake...but Dookie is still a really good album.

lol. so true. The albums that PROCEEDED this are really good too for all the reasons u mentioned above. Their reach in recent years far exceeded their grasp, but they were a great pop punk and back in the early 90s. For people who like this period of Green Day also check out Screeching Weasel and The Mr. T Experience. Great stuff!

John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan

BOB DYLAN
JOHN WESLEY HARDING
1967-COLUMBIA
Produced By BOB JOHNSTON

1. John Wesley Harding
2. As I Went Out One Morning
3. I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
4. All Along The Watchtower
5. The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest
6. Drifter's Escape
7. Dear Landlord
8. I Am A Lonesome Hobo
9. I Pity The Poor Immigrant
10. The Wicked Messenger
11. Down Along The Cove
12. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight

John Wesley Harding is a powerful set of songs from Bob Dylan...so why is it less known and not as revered as some of his other titles? The performance of those songs. Dylan's voice is just enough off to make this album a bit of a tough listen, which is a true shame.

Because this album contains gems like "All Along The Watchtower" and "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine" and "Down Along The Cove", song after great song. Had Dylan recorded this better, it could stand as one of his best ever albums. As it is, it's still essential for any Dylan fan, and worth having even for those more casual fans. And you can also hear where Judas Priest got their name....

My god. You're totally right! The vocals are really flat. I've always wondered why this is one of my favorite Dylan albums since you're right. The songs are great. The singing is just somewhat uninspired for some reason. Like he's going through the motions or sth. They lack his usual passion & energy.

You know what you should do. You should make a thread of alternative takes and/or covers of this album. Put together a playlist one song at a time compiling the best John Wesley Harding album out there. I'd totally listen to that.

What do you think of the vocals on this, Mercury? Anyone else hear this?

Thank God for Rhino Records. Tommy James has one of the best success stories in rock & roll. He was still in high school when he and his band, The Shondells, recorded "Hanky Panky" in 1963. It was a regional hit in the midwest, and the band got some shows out of it, but nothing big. Three years later, James got a call from a DJ who told him that the song was #1 in Pittsburgh. The Shondells were long gone, so James went to PA and put together a new band...and soon the song was a worldwide #1 hit. He went on to have a great 6 year run of hit singles and great songs.

And James was one groovy guy. Between 1966 and 1971, he rolled out classics like "I Think We're Alone Now", "Crimson And Clover", "Crystal Blue Persuasion", and many more. This Rhino collection has all of his great hits plus some cool secondary tracks. And a couple of duds...and it's really long at 27 tracks...but this is all the Tommy James you will ever need. And, face it...you DO need some Tommy James in your life!

11. Wishlist
12. Last Kiss
13. Nothing As It Seems
14. Light Years
15. I Am Mine
16. Man Of The Hour
17. Yellow Ledbetter

Ah. The best of Pearl Jam. And in the best way, too. Split over two generous discs, rearviewmirror is one disc of rockers and one disc of mellower stuff, so you can enjoy it depending on your mood. And the choices are perfect...a generous helping from Ten, Vs. and Vitalogy, plus every other really great track from them up until 2003.

It's actually the second disc that gets the nod here, with the inclusion of their unlikely biggest hit, "Last Kiss", a morbid cover from a Christmas fans only release, and the always excellent "Yellow Ledbetter". This is a best of set you can't go wrong with. An easy choice, and an easy rating.

Photographs & Memories: His Greatest Hits by Jim Croce

JIM CROCE
PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES: HIS GREATEST HITS
1974-21 RECORDS
Produced By TERRY CASHMAN & TOMMY WEST

1. Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
2. Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)
3. Photographs And Memories
4. Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)
5. Time In A Bottle
6. New York's Not My Home
7. Workin' At The Car Wash Blues
8. I Got A Name
9. I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song
10. You Don't Mess Around With Jim
11. Lover's Cross
12. One Less Set Of Footsteps
13. These Dreams
14. Roller Derby Queen

Released shortly after Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash in 1973, this collection was the first of his career, and it remains the best. It has all of Croce's best tracks, and even though there have been numerous posthumous releases, none has topped this one, or even come close. His rockers still sound excellent today, but it's songs like "Lover's Cross" and "These Dreams" that sound dated...and adding strings to Croce's music was never a good idea.

Still, this is a good compilation to have for all the great "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", and the less obvious but just as excellent "Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)" and "Roller Derby Queen". Who knows what else Croce could have done in his career...this shows just how promising it was when it ended.

Van Halen by Van Halen

VAN HALEN
1978-WARNER BROS
Produced By TED TEMPLEMAN

1. Runnin' With The Devil
2. Eruption
3. You Really Got Me
4. Ain't Talkin' Bout Love
5. I'm The One
6. Jamie's Cryin'
7. Atomic Punk
8. Feel Your Love Tonight
9. Little Dreamer
10. Ice Cream Man
11. On Fire

Ah...Van Halen. The original. The one that spawned "Eruption", which gave birth to an entire generation of annoying guitar wankers. Our introduction to David Lee Roth, maybe the single most annoying rock star of all time. The beginning of hair metal. The beginning of the end of rock as we knew it. Oh, how much I would love to eternally hate this album...

Can't do it. No matter how hard I try. Van Halen is also the home to some really great songs. Up and down the track list, it's all good, and it's perfect if "Eruption" works for you. They cover The Kinks. "Jamie's Cryin'", "Atomic Punk", "Runnin' With The Devil", all on one record. I can't hate this, as much as I'd like to. It's too good. And despite Roth's ear piercing yelps, I really do enjoy it. A lot. Dammit.

Soul Alive by Solomon Burke

SOLOMON BURKE
SOUL ALIVE
1988-ROUNDER
Produced By SOLOMON BURKE

1. Introduction/Everybody Needs Somebody To Love
2. Medley: Tonight's The Night/Beautiful Brown Eyes/Just A Matter Of Time/Monologue (The Women Of Today)/Hold What You've Got/He'll Have To Go
3. Cry To Me
4. Medley: Monologue/Take Me (Just As I Am)/I Can't Stop Loving You/Monologue/I Can't Stop Loving You (Reprise)
5. Down In The Valley
6. Proud Mary
7. Introduction To Encore/Gotta Get You Off My Mind (Instrumental)
8. Medley: Meet Me In Church/The Price/Words/Monologue
9. Medley: You're Good For Me/Send Me Some Lovin'
10. Medley: Gotta Get You Off My Mind/Having A Party/Amen

If there's anyone who knows how to throw a party, it's Solomon Burke. Soul Alive is a masterful live show from this master of soul that will leave you standing, clapping, screaming for more, and maybe speaking in tongues while you're at it. Burke's energy is non-stop, and the songs just keep coming at you. His monologues are pretty excelklent too...rants about being good to your women, not forgetting to tell the one you love that you love them. Burke's messages are positive and laced with soul.

And songwise...the medleys are flawless. Single songs like "Cry To Me" and "Down In The Valley" are beautifully done, and he does "Proud Mary" plenty of justice. This is a truly great live album...and revival show...and church service...all rolled up into one neat little package. Excellent.
