The first track starts off very quietly, sounding quite like a John Martyn song, and slowly evolves into what makes up most of the album : full-fledged, warm, lush soul music. It manages to retain that intimate feeling throughout its course though, probably because of the lack of brass intruments ; it's all guitar, bass, piano, strings and flute, which create a very calming and appeasing background for Callier's incredible voice to develop. Ho Tsing Mee, the most upbeat song of the lot, would be my favorite track. Marvelous record! Also the cover might be one of the most fitting ones I've ever seen.
which Repo's chart reminded me to listen to. I'm starting with disc 2 ; I may come back to the first one after that, I'll see. I love Donovan and this is no exception. So pretty. The songs with the flute are the best (The Enchanted Gypsy is haunting and The Tinker And The Crab is almost as lovely as a Bunyan song), but the whole thing is brilliant. Very much needed in the sorry state of sickness I am in... Not sure if I prefer this or Sunshine Superman. It's certainly not better than Forever Changes though, let's not be silly 😜
