Fun little album. The Entertainer is truly a brilliant track in its own right, though, really incredible, and leagues above any other ragtime track IMO (and most other songs in any genre as well). As for the rest, well, it's ragtime ; sounding so dated is both its greatest asset and most crippling flaw. Most of the time it's a no, but when it's the moment, though, there's few music as compelling as this.
Edit : checked you diary afterwards, and uh, there seems to be "some reason" in that case haha
Just fin ishing a second straight mindblowing listen to In The Court of the Crimson King... (#6 album on RYM, and I finally see that and don't say "wtf?!?") and now I am starting as I type...
(#7 on same site, these 2 albums always were a good ol' 1-2 punch of "Ryan, these are albums which you don't love thus you are stupid"...at least that is what would go through my head whenever I'd take a peep at the RYM 1000.)
and honestly i'm very excited to give this another listen. This is to shoegaze what In The Court... was for Prog in my mind (namely, the grandaddy classic which always made me think the genre just "wasn't my thing".)
So yesterday, thanks to the BEA thread, I decided to listen to all of the "1001 albums to listen to before you die" that i haven't already heard. Prior to taking on that "listening challenge", i scheduled a number of power pop albums to listen to. This one, although not referred to in wikipedia as a power pop album, coincidentally is also on the "1001 albums" list. _________________ fav artists NOW | ALL-TIME favs | i listen 2 more music than u so u don't have 2!
it's been a couple months god i love this album, funny i HATED it the first time i listened. I was sure i wasted my money which was a lot tighter at 15 the first time i bought this record. Now its a top 5 all time of mine: Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band
Thought I'd try this again, and honestly, I don't get the appeal. Emotionally stunted music.
Geez.. wonder why they changed the cover art? Raped woman on the sidewalk. The misogyny is strong here.
Even if I ignore the lyrics, I think the strength of the album (and their entire catalog, really) comes down to the three tunes: Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, and Sweet Child of Mine. November Rain was awful, as was Patience, and their other singles were covers.
