Stop everything! Wait. I take that back. I mean... I've stopped everything. 1992 is on hold. Competing with Mercury for making the best damn 1974 chart is on hold. Because I'm gong to a music festival! That's right. You heard me. And it's a good music festival. A really good one. With bands and stuff. Pitchfork would probably even call it the best. Those biased fucks. But, the line-up does look pretty killer ...
So for now on I'm going to be doing what I always do to gear for the summer music festival season. Make Mix-Tapes. Tons & tons of mix tapes to give to my friends (okay, friend. But, she's a super cute friend! Smile ) who won't even listen to them because things like Spotify and Pandora now exist, Jeff. We don't need your stinkin' mix tapes no more, dude. lol. Yeah. Like they ever listened to them anyways. But, I do. And they end up being killer souvenirs.
Album one is already making me burst out into a big, giant smile despite my Celtics getting completley drubbed tonight by the Cavs...
Now if my Celtics can just pull off this upset of the Cavs๐๐ [-o<
Wow that is an amazing lineup - have fun! I'm also seeing Courtney Barnett in July so I'm excited too. Do you prefer this latest album or Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit?

And yeah, C us rise!
Hmmm... That's really hard to say. Just started listening to the new one (two or three total listens so far) & I already know she's a keeper. Sometimes I Sit is a super solid indie rock album. One of the best pure indie rock with guitars of the last ten years. But, Tell Me How seems to have more emotional depth. It has the potentioal to be a more personal album and thus a more special album. That's just a hunch. I haven't heard it enough.
... if you haven't. Some of her best stuff. I grew up on indie rock & I can't think of anyone better at playing classic, guitar oriented indie rock rn & making it her own.
Love this => C us Rise!!!
Hadn't seen this phrase before. It's perfect for this insane, better than anyone could've hoped for season. Would love to see them take down Lebron et al. ๐

Love both these EPs. Honestly I'm not sure if she'll ever top her earliest work, but I will listen to the new one soon with an open mind. Wasn't wild about the collab with Kurt Vile, which I think is probably the weakest thing she's released. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM

Just listened to noname's debut for the first time and thought it was cool....
... and saw that it was one of your faves. My knowledge of hip hop is pretty limited so can u help telp me a little bit about the lineage of this kind of sound such as who her major influeces were, similar bands, whatever other thoughts u may have on this kind of stuff. It's really hard for me to place it in context with other shit I know.
Very good though. I can at least tell that. lol.

Alex G is a recently appreciated artist by myself. Also yeah I really really like that new Barnet. Agree that her collab with Vile was not great (and not Vile).
I'll miss your arms race with me for 1974, but yeah I would be researching this wealth of talent as well if i were you.
Fuck the haters, War on Drugs is great. Some great great guitar stuff.
Meanwhile for 1974 I am listening to Secret Treaties and I'm....really liking it. The lyreics are friggin nuts. I know its high on your 74 chart and many others. So I can see why. Really solid rock album throuigh andf through so far. _________________ -Ryan
I like both the Courtney Barnett's albums but I'm also inclined to prefer her last one but like you should also have a couple more listens to really decide.
I should also check out those first EP's I haven't heard yet.

Glad you liked it! It's my favorite mixtape of all-time, and it's also the first time I eagerly awaited an artist's debut mixtape before it was released. That was because of Noname's outstanding features on projects by other Chicago luminaries like Mick Jenkins and Chance The Rapper. There is a really vibrant new school of rap and r&b in Chicago, and all the people in the scene are connected to some degree. This includes Noname, Chance The Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Saba, Smino, Donnie Trumpet, Vic Mensa, Joey Purp, BJ The Chicago Kid, and TheMIND*. Most of it is soulful and jazzy to some degree - perfect for the Mellow Zone. This generation is all the Chicago kids in Home/Homecoming who "want to rap and make soul beats just like you." That is to say, Kanye is a major jumping off point for their music, and probably Common to a lesser extent. In contrast, the other big scene in Chicago now is menacing drill with its clattering beats (and its baby cousin bop), so it really is a tale of two cities.

* in rough order by how essential they are
Nice checked out some chance today and could hear the kanye influence on a couple of tracks for sure. Not sure what I think of it yet, but that's normal for me on first listen.

sounds like this might be cool especially live. What's the most important album in this scene?
