Boosie Badazz - Boosie Blues Cafe (2018)
Can't decide if this is genius or utter dogshit. Boosie has made some great blues-influenced rap songs over the years, but here he's largely just melodically adlibbing platitudes over cheap-sounding, cookie-cutter blues-rock instrumentals (and occasionally some pretty melodramatic, downtempo R'n'B) that sound like they could've been made on eJay. This isn't a blues album, that's for sure. I mean, there's a track here that sounds like The Cure doing zydeco, featuring Boosie rapping about getting drunk and high with his friends and family, which is just fucking bizarre. It's not that this is half-assed, because it's clear Boosie really went all in on this concept, but his predictable and undercooked lyrics avoid the specificities that make his best work so essential. It feels like he's made an album just so that any gangsta rap-averse family members he has can actually enjoy his music and not just his success, and in the process has potentially alienated his actual fans, even if his intentions are great. At the same time, I'm not sure how to compare this to anything he's ever done before, and there's a sort of morbid curiosity that makes me refuse to stop listening, or perhaps even a slightly stunned half-enjoyment. His voice is still great, but this has the feel of a novelty project, despite obviously being made in earnest. Either way, this might be one of the strangest left-turns I've ever heard, and that in itself has to be applauded, I guess. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
