Haven't heard this record... is it on par or considerably less awesome?
Yep. They had just lost Braxton before this record, so this is considerably more of a step back. It's bland and lacking a certain inventiveness. Their third album was a big course correction due to this and is the record where they find they can write songs and be inventive without Braxton. That said, by-the-numbers Battles is still Battles, so its fine. I think people with less of an experience with math rock tend to gravitate to it because its pretty streamlined.
I don't like it much, but I don't dislike it either.
