For 2001, This is possibly the weirdest record from the canon. With how there are elements of hip hop but also nods to ambient music as well as other things in between. And there are quite a lot that I do enjoy about this and quite respect for being outside of the box. However, do I love it. Not quite. For one not all the passages musically stick the landing where I end up feeling somewhat bored for not moving me. For a point of reference, even though this album might not be the most lyrical the album You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack at least sounds laser focused for being a druggy and trippy endeavor where it emulates staying up and running on fumes at 3 am in the morning. Then I also have to note of the vocals. They are actually quite interesting where I don't think I have ever heard a delivery like that. And there is probably some verses within this album that would make me go damn. But there is some caveats to the vocals. I want to bring up that the delivery is realistically an acquired taste and can be somewhat a deal breaker for some listeners. However for the most part I don't have problem with them. I think my complaints and this might be a me factor, but not only do I feel these vocals thematically fit with album. They remind me of puzzle pieces that look like they fit but don't. But also feel like the vocals are a bit under the mix where there are points where I don't know what the trio was saying. (I think it's a trio.)

So with that rambling grade wise is probably the hardest part for me where I would grade this a 70 and could either go higher in the 75 or 80 range for being such an out there project where I can't think of most records that sound like this. But also could be a 65 or worse a 60 where I don't feel it meshes completely and sounds all over the place, or for my case feeling it didn't meet my expectations of what I wanted it to be. Because that intro is super dope.

Nice analysis! Just listened for the first time and think it's pretty amazing. Very cinematic and world building. Personally I think the vocals and music are a perfect fit for each other. Definitely a world, I'll be spending more time in. More my thing than Aquemeni nonsurprisingly.

Repo's Brave New World of Hip Hop

Godhead
1. Aesop Rock - Labor Days
2. Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

Great
3. cLOUDDEAD - s/t

Good
3. Outkast - Aquemini *** Need to relisten after comments from baystate & Luigii ***

Thank you Tilly. Also quite glad you gave the album a listen and enjoyed it a lot. That's the real beauty of this site.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath

This is one of the two albums I would have chosen for myself first, and a timely choice as I am currently reading Ozzy's autobiography. I loved the atmosphere the start of the album sets with the rain and the bells, and later some harmonica in a heavy metal album was cool to hear the whole album is a great listen with some excellent riffs, and good solos. I do struggle with Ozzy's vocals at times but even he admits to not being a great singer, especially at the start of his career. Not quite as good as Paranoid of course but still an enjoyable listen. 8/10, 11/17 for 1970, and 65/100 for the 70's.

Luigii I think we'll go with Cake.

Totally agree (with the bold)!!! When I first joined this site, this was the second album I wrote about. It was #2 in my overall, second only to Pornography by the Cure. Those first four Sabbath albums are untouchable in my book but if anyone is looking for something pretty freaking awesome from that same time period, you have to check out the self-titled album by Bang from 1971. It's pretty awesome & my current addiction.

Like the Weezer, this album shares the quality where even when the album isn't the longest clocking in 36 minutes but feels quite rewarding and built as an hour long project. But I also need to mention that the sound palette for this album is quite quirky but also welcoming to newcomers or people that aren't ready for the hard experimental music that old or new listeners have never heard. And I adore the record a lot because of it. One thing is for sure, I am excited to see if there record from 1996 can hit that similar high that this album shares. So I was happy with this album. Grade wise I could see this as an 95 but like the Weezer album, I could see this decay a bit so it might be a 90.

Pash I would listen to Tears for Fears album.

Now this part does need a bit of explanation, back on Friday, I was able to listen to Lemonade the first time and quite enjoy the album a lot where I believe it's an excellent album. But it made me double check for Jay Z and his album is back on I Tunes so...

So that should be it. However, I want to create a custom list for 2000. And then realized that there are two albums that joined the bottom of the list that I didn't listen. So

BEA 2000 Canon List Clean Up #1
#97 The Complete Hot Five and Seven Recordings-Louis Armstrong
#100 Pump Up The Valuum-NOFX

P.S. that does mean the Prefuse 73 album will have to be booted out. Will make it on to my actual year chart when I want to update that. Whenever I feel like.

The Hurting by Tears For Fears

I loved Mad World when it came out but at the time I didn't have the opportunity to listen to the album. As it turns out I wish I had of because this is right up my alley both then and now. Some great synth pop, with an - as silly as this may sound considering it came out in 1983 - almost post-punk revival sound. Quality songs, a few of which I had actually heard before (I thought Mad World was the only song I knew), especially at the start of the album with the first five songs. It loses steam a bit in the middle, but ends strongly. A great album that I liked enough to even scrape into my top 100 for the 80s after only one listen. 8.5/10, 7/17 for 1983, and 95/100 for the 80's.

NOFX albums are usually fun Luigii.

Damn this slaps a lot. I do have my caveats where I wished some songs off this album were a bit longer to continue the high or for me at least feeling that the song could have gone a little longer. Or how the humor on this album can be a bit on the nose. (Which is funny to me since I gave Tenacious D and the Mindless album higher grades than I will give this album) But I still found this album great and am curious for the rest of NOFX's other works in the future.
Grade:85

(2) Pash listen to Purple from Stone Temple Pilots

Nice! One of my faves from the 80s and could probably make my 80s decade charts for sure. I like this one much better than the more reknowned follow up that had that Shout song which I was never all that crazy about and thought was a bit annoying especially with all the radio play it got.

Going to throw it on rn while I clean some dishes...

edit: Yeah. This is sensesational. Easily on of my favorite New Wave pop albums of the 80s and definitely decade chart worthy. Putting it in my 83 chart rn...

The Cenubites by The Cenubites

It's Kool Keith.

Luigii, Girls Can Tell is a great one.

Ok, I need to change this up.

This is probably going to get me a red card, but I have such a back log of albums to listen to on my "watch later" on youtube, that I have to use this game to get my ass in gear. I have culled these albums from all corners of the internet, so I feel it still is in the spirit of this game. I have about 174 potential albums in the list.

From my "Watch Later" list on Youtube.

Time Machines- Time Machines
Le Mans- Entresemana
"Blue" Gene Tyranny- Out of The Blue
Bobby Conn- Rise Up!
Hanne Hukkelberg- Rykestrasse 68
Wolf Eyes- Dread
Stara Rzeka - Cieล„ chmury nad ukrytym polem
Enno Velthuys - Vreemde Landen, Vol. 1
Roland Kayn- Cybernetics
Brume โ€Ž- Apocalypse At 6.AM.

Yellow card ๐Ÿ˜‰

You can split your ten up between as many chart/list sources as you want (even one each from ten different sources), but they should still come from sources that are not your own, and that others can check out for their own benefit. No need to redo this post, but guidance for the future to maintain the spirit of the game.

That's an interesting list though. I hadn't heard of any of these but looked them up and most sound intriguing. I think I would enjoy choosing and checking out some of these obscurities.
