This is a phenomenal record at all levels. The backing band is incredible (I recognize Bernard Purdie's name...and just look at that discography), and each and every track they pump out incredible music that feels exactly right. GSH's fragile baritone is emotionally hard-hitting and his delivery seems pretty unusual. On "I Think I'll Call It Morning", for instance, he drops the first note of certain lyrics down into the bass register...I didn't catch this until my second listen and it blew me away. Maybe it's a commonly heard technique in R&B or soul, but there are some nuances in his singing that I find incredible. The lyrics are, of course, thought-provoking and well written. I don't know of any other lyricists with a Master's degree writing for a popular form of music, but I wish I did. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was in response to a track by The Last Poets, so I'm eager to dive down that rabbit hole for some more literary tracks. I'm also gonna check out Small Talk, Free Will, and Winter In America real soon.
Glad you loved it. He's an all-time great melismatic singer and lyricist. Interestingly, Johnny Pate played a critical role on both this record and Superfly. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM
It seems weird to me that the first genre for this is "Progressive Pop" it's pretty straightforward Rock with pop and progressive elements. Anyways, I was hoping for more of a specific regional sound with this album being from Finland, but I got some well-played, if a bit generic-sounding mid 2000's rock. The song "Pienokainen" was probably my favorite, because it did have some flutes and other things going on. Pleasant, but not anything that makes me want to come back for more.
Jameth, "Donuts" would be my choice.

Interesting, indeed. I see he also worked with Mayfield and The Impressions on Keep On Pushin', which I loved and probably should have revisited before I listened to Superfly. Probably will tonight.

I found this a bit disappointing compared to the revelation that First Utterance was. Still interesting progressive folk but it's really only three proper songs and a poor quality musical curiosity of an unreleased 15 minute track that was going to be on their next album that never was. I recommend just listening to First Utterance again instead. 7/10 and 24/26 for 2012.
Rocka I'm choosing Dubstar because I have actually heard of them before and know one song of theirs. I don't expect a lot from it but I am interested to hear their cover of Billy Bragg's St Swithin's Day.

I was due another hip-hop album, and oh my god, this was a great way to get back into it. These beats are brilliant...and brilliantly edited together. This is best played with the lights low, so you can let it ebb and flow around you...it feels like watching people walk by in slow motion. I don't know if I can say anything about the circumstances of this album's recording and release that hasn't already been said, but it's apparent that Donuts meant a lot to him and he poured everything he had into it. Great album...I've got it at 1/7 for 2006.

The new songs are disappointing, but that's pretty typical for a group of musicians in their 60s, especially one that was separated for decades. "The Maalgard Suite" is the prize to me. I consider Virgin Records' rejection of their second album a felony. The quality is crummy, but it was worth it for me to sift through the noise and try to mentally recreate a studio version of it.
Well, I'm back. After from having a cold as well as being on a summer break for the last few days, it is time to continue this crawl through 2001.

This is one of those times where, I do understand the plight that Chief had about this compilation. Hell for me the only Pink Floyd record I listen to was Wish You Were Here. And I love it to the point when 2001 is done, I will finally tackle my plans for the rest of the year. But for the other stuff, it is quite excellent. I do agree where I do want to listen to the other albums on how they are connected for an album to album base wise. But for a song to song, I enjoyed most of them. Not crazy about Money. But with this comp, the best quality for it will be exploring other albums. Grade wise:90
Also for other users, could we lower this in the list, since I feel like this is cheating.

This was a good Spaghetti Western score from the master. I especially liked both versions of the title track bookending it. However, too much of it doesn't work outside a film context for me to consider it a classic album. Several trivial-seeming tracks. Still, it's quite good overall. 3.5/5.

A chilled-out blend of of dream pop, alternative dance, and a bit of trip hop that works most of the time. It has a sound that's very of it's time, but that only adds to the appeal for me. The cover is also, ahem, interesting.
Baystate, Arthur Russell is fantastic.
