Mercury Rev get compared with Flaming Lips a lot, and now that I've finally tried an album by them it seems pretty apt. A beautiful blend of pop and psych sensibilities. My only criticism would be that several songs feel underwritten. Overall, it's a great record. 4/5.

So I read somewhere that people were less happy with this album because they slowed their tempo down, but I actually like it the most of the Slayer albums. As amazing was the fast tempos, it suffered a tad from an almost Alvin and the Chipmunks sound because of the high tempos, so I couldn't take it seriously. This album on the other hand might make a top 10 metal album list if I were ever to make one. I felt like the guitar parts were deliberate instead of, well I'm in a metal band so I guess I solo now. And then there were guitar parts that did more than the perfectly clean shred, and put some tasteful stuff together, but even the shredding was tasteful. I didn't want to laugh at the lyrics or singing, even though I didn't pay that much attention to them as soon as I realized they were decent. Usually I laugh at the either absurd stuff like rape is cool or I'll murder you and rape your throat stuff just to be in your face not because it actually matches any real emotion. There's clearly a little of that on this album, but nothing really laugh worthy - and then the dude actually sings like a human. Drums are both amazing, but then often a little predictable. A little too clean if that makes any sense, and even though there's barely a bass presence on this album, I didn't feel like the songs sucked because of it. So I'm probably giving it a slightly inflated 85/4.
2. BayState - when I was a teenager, this was one of my favorite albums. I hope it isn't bore fest dad rock for you, but that's ok if it is.

Simultaeously everything that people find great and everything people find annoying in vaporwave. Personally, I can dig it, but I'd also tudnerstand why people would think that this is just stupid. On an actual musical level it kind of is, but my easily manipulated brain just likes it.

Well this must be one of the most intelligent, positive message hip hop albums I've ever heard. I admit even though I've heard a fair amount of hip hop I'm still not good at discussing it, but he seems to me to be a skillful rapper, in content, flow, and delivery (natural sounding and easy to understand), and the jazz inspired beats complement the lyrics and tone of the album well. It seems a bit of a shame that an album like this has only 6 votes here on BEA, which is usually friendly to hip hop, and isn't more widely known. I give it a high 7.5/10...which is a good score from me for a hip hop album, and place it 16/32 for 1998 making it the highest ranked hip hop album for the year in my chart.
I'm torn on a couple I want to hear here so let's continue with the hip hop - Basehead might be fun.

Great alternative R&B. A bit lowkey (no pun intended), dreamy, and pretty brutal lyrically. I mean the story is just so dark. I guess I'd recommend it to Frank Ocean fans, although this one is more challenging, but also more consistent and interesting than Blonde and Channel Orange. It's eerie, very well produced and there are some songs (Dragged and Revenge Song) here that beat everything else I've heard in this genre/style. Very passionate vocals (all the tracks where his half-screaming half-crying vocals are prominent are incredibly heartfelt), great delivery and top notch songwriting. Even when the music is a bit lacking, lyrics are quality. May easily end up on my decade chart after several more listens. 8.5/10
