Nouns by No Age
This is the first album of this band I owned and I liked it but it's clear that their latter album would become much better than this fairly murky and unfocused album so I gradually grew out of it. It's still ranked fairly low in my year chart but nevertheless rises from rank 66 to 48.

Sparks Of Ancient Light by Al Stewart
Again not a bad album but again without real highlights and in general not enough to earn to be ranked in my year chart.
This is the last Al Stewart album I have listened to in this first round so time for a round-up:
It will come as no surprise that The Year Of The Cat of 1976 remains his one and only classic with timeless after timeless song. I didn't know many other of his albums before but it's a bit of a surprise I like his older albums more than his newer ones with as second best the album just before YotC, Modern Times of 1975 and closely followed by Orange from 1972 and Past, Present and Future from 1973. The only more recent album which can break this pattern is Russians & Americans of 1984.
The other album can be classified a bit more in the MOR genre to my taste but they are still very listenable because of that great voice of his which I really love and the storytelling which turns every song in a history lesson.
Them Crooked Vultures by Them Crooked Vultures
I still remember how this album blew my socks off when I listened to it for the first time. After a decade of fairly boring music this felt like a breath of fresh air and would open the door to a more interesting decade. Gradually that surprise feeling has worn off somewhat: it's still a great album but I wonder a bit now why I was so flabbergasted by it at the time. But of course Bandoliers and Gunman still sound great and I would really like them to make another one of those albums. It moves from the 4th to the 5th rank of the year which is still very good of course.

Here's The Tender Coming by The Unthanks
A Northern UK folk band with nice harmonic singing between two sisters and fairly interesting melodies but overall not really my type of music.
And of course I also promised Tilly to listen to the new British Lion/Steve Harris album. While it doesn't have the epic songwriting of Iron Maiden nor the fantastic voice of Bruce Dickinson, this is still a fairly good guitar album which looks back to the classic hard rock period of the seventies/eighties. I have yet to hear a really compelling new album of 2020 but this deserves its place amongst the other albums I already listened to of this year.
And of course I also promised Tilly to listen to the new British Lion/Steve Harris album. While it doesn't have the epic songwriting of Iron Maiden nor the fantastic voice of Bruce Dickinson, this is still a fairly good guitar album which looks back to the classic hard rock period of the seventies/eighties. I have yet to hear a really compelling new album of 2020 but this deserves its place amongst the other albums I already listened to of this year.
Completely agree. Nothing new or innovative, or even great here. BUT, a good SOLID hard rock album from a legend.
Here's something a bit harder from this year as well that's definitely better capturing 80s melodic NWOBHM pretty well...

A very good album Tilly and at the moment together with the new Nada Surf album my favorite of the year. I'm also listening to the new Sepultura and not yet taken for it although it's very varied.
Wake Up The Nation by Paul Weller
This is not the best album of the world, it goes in all directions and the good songs are scarce. I degraded this album from the 28th to the 54th rank on my personal year chart of the year.

Transference by Spoon
I like some albums of Spoon but this isn't one of them. I Saw The Light is my favorite of Transference but that's about it.
Yuck by Yuck
This was my favorite album of the 2010's for a very long time but that changed a bit. However this is still one of my favorite albums of the decade and the best of the year with nearly every track a solid winner even the slower songs. But the best song and I think also the best song of the decade for me is Holing Out. They use every trick in the book to make this one of the most exhiliarating song ever but they do it very well. This is a winner of an album something they couldn't repeat on their next albums

West by Wooden Shjips
Also a very good album where the droning sound works brilliantly well: sometimes they sound like Sabbath, sometimes they sound like Crazy Horse (on the fantastic Home) but they always sound like Wooden Shjips. And this is only the second time since Hüsker Dü where I actually enjoy a song being played backwards. This albums deserves the 14th rank of my 2011 year chart.

Listening to that new nada surf and it sorta scratches the same itch as Travis' The Invisible Band for me. Made-for-radio super optimistic cheerful & bright indie/power pop. Great stuff to play on days you need the sun to shine a little brighter!!! lol.
