Gรฉrard Grisey: Les Espaces Acoustiques...fan Asbury

Throughout my jounrey with Electroacoustic-type music, I had never heard the term "Spectralism" until now. Which is kind of strange, because apparently I've listned to people that practice this compositional style, but I didn't even know it. Anyways, I don't know how to explain, or even if I understand it myself, but just know that these pieces are superbly performed and written. I can't believe that I listened to a nearly 15 minute long piece for solo VIOLA (of all things) and it was musically engaging for a large portion of it. I guess that the artist hated the term "Spectralism" in his later years, and dismissed whatever it was supposed to mean. I think that the main take away is that "timbre & texture" are what matters here instead of actual musical composition. Good listen.

Do The Jam, babyblue.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins

Yeah, this is something proximal to my comfort zone. I also would have been happy with The Police or Kate Bush, or even the other Peter Gabriel album. I am sure I don't need to tell anyone how good Cocteau Twins are so I'll personalise it. Out of the five Cocteau Twins albums I've heard, this is the one I like the most so far. Which is not really surprising seeing as this has more gothic/post punk tones to it compared to their later releases, which suits me. As well as Lorelei, Persephone and Pandora (For Cindy) were my highlights. 8.5/10, and top 10 for 1984 at 10/29.

Picchio dal Pozzo sounds like it might go down well on a lazy Sunday afternoon for me!

Picchio Dal Pozzo by Picchio Dal Pozzo

The Canterbury scene works surprisingly well in Italy. This progressive album is diverse enough to keep me interested for it's 40 minute run time, but it's not quite impressive enough musically to make me go, WOW! It's an OK album, but I'm not going head over heels to praise it or otherwise.

Oh man, I'm glad you're doing my list Purple, but it's so hard to pick from. Let's do the Paisely Underground of The Rain Parade.

It's from this EP, which is even better than the album:

So by Peter Gabriel

This is an interesting album. The songwriting is very good. His singing is solid, although the Kate Bush cameo was the best part of the album and made me wish I were listening to her. The production is very dated - it reminds me of 80s Johnny Clegg & Savuka with much less African influence - but it doesn't ruin things. Really enjoyable overall, but I don't exactly hear the greatness. 3.5/5.

2. Never heard of any of those artists. Take it from the top Chief.

Emergency Third Rail Power Trip by Rain Parade

This was great. With feet firmly planted in the past I also got a feeling this was a few years ahead of it's time as well. The first four songs especially hit my hippy trippy psych sweet spot. What helped make this a great album was the exciting song writing. I was often unsure where the songs were going to go, and love where they went. The bass on Look At Merri was excellent, making it my favourite track on the album. A great quality, highly enjoyable album that had me invested in every song. 8.5/10, and 7/20 for 1983, and just sneaks into my decade chart for now.

Let's go with alt-j

Streetcleaner by Godflesh
This sounds decidedly like 90s album (it was released in 1989), much like Soundgarden's early work. Industrial, dirty and heavy sound most commonly associated with 90s rock and alternative. And I mean that in the positive way, I really like the sound of Streetcleaner. Pulsating, crushing bass and repetitive (and HEAVY) drum patterns are what drives this album. The themes are similar to the sound.

"Smoke filled room
Blank clean screen
Soft fragile
Take this back

Easing flame
Time's run out
Remove this shell
Of the dream long dead"

Liked it a lot, sounds larger than life. Industrial metal is a genre that I haven't delved deeper into, but now's my chance to correct this I guess. 8/10

This Heat are an essential experimental/post-punk band, and I would certainly expect them to be high up on Chief's chart.

From Books And Dreams by Message

A somewhat unique Psych Rock thing that has flourishes of Krautrock weirdness. Really enjoyed the opening "Sleep!" and title track combo. "Sigh" sounded like it should have been on a completely different album, though, and it kind of takes you out of the atmosphere that the album tries to create. If you want some heavy riffage though, there are some good ones to be found on here.

Ledzep, I don't know Greg Ward, but go with him.

Pescado 2 by Pescado Rabioso

This was pretty jammin'. Frontman Luis Alberto Spinetta has a real knack for hooky melody. No one in the band is exactly putting on a clinic, but Spinetta's songwriting and the overall energy make up for it. I'm not entirely sure that this meets my expectations for heavy psych...this strikes me more as being somewhere between early Deep Purple and early glam. It's not especially heavy nor psychedelic. But...anywho. The long 74 minutes runtime was easier to digest since the longer tracks like "Peteribi" and "ยกHola Pequeรฑo Ser!!" are the most enjoyable on the album. And yes, this Argentinian rock album from 1973 oddly opens up with 38 seconds of beatboxing:
