^^^ Artaud was a tough nut for me to crack; I didnโt think much of it the first time I listened to it. It needs a few listens spread over time. Sort of like a lot of subtler singer/songwriter type albums, which is basically what it is.
I suspected Terminal Redux was the better album. Hopefully, the seven years helped them learn to write more coherent songs. Hereโs to hoping. ๐ฒ _________________ Can you play free, or in three, or agree to try something new?
A solid archival record that should have been made in the 90s, but was not released until 2004. Would have probably been more high profile, because it sounds like it would have fit in nicely during that time, but by 2004 would have been a little dated. However, the tracks here are pretty tight, and have a nice Detroit kind of sound, but with more mid 90s techno production.
Babyblue, listen to Faust IV.

Torres by Torres
A very enjoyable indie rock/pop record, with decent songwriting and fantastic sounding guitars, drums, violins, cello... well pretty much everything. I've been enjoying a lot of jangle pop, post-punk and indie lately, so this was a nice fit. The production is not too out-there or complex, but the songs sound perfect for this kind of laid back, dreamy and sad indie. Sound engineer deserves a raise. Not a lot of highlights though, only Moon & Back and Waterfall have really impressed me, but it seemed fairly consistent on the first listen. There's some adventurous moments too, like the lengthy November Baby with a great buildup. 7,5/10

I agree with your summary of the Torres album Zep. Moon & Back was the highlight for me. Having previously heard about how she was adopted at a very young age, to hear her write and sing a song from the perspective of her birth mother I found very moving.
I am sure I've said before that R.E.M. are a top 10 all time favourite band for me, so it's about time (actually probably way past time) I heard another one of their earlier albums that I hadn't gotten around to yet, and this was great! I would say their first great album, with better song-writing than Murmer in my opinion. So. Central Rain is probably one of my favourite early era R.E.M. songs. The passion in Stipe's vocals in the chorus get to me every time, and I love that bassline. Apart from the other great songs I already knew well, the rest of the album was also some consistently very good songs, with some nice variety. Of the songs that were knew to me I especially enjoyed Time After Time, Camera, and Little America. (Don't Go Back To) Rockville in between Camera and Little America provided a very strong finish to the album in my opinion. I'm giving it a rating of 8.5/10, putting it in my top 10 of 1984 at 10/35, and adding it to my decade chart at 95/100.
VHS Head and Gum Takes Tooth both sound like interesting, rather unique experiences, but right now I'm more curious to hear a little bit more of some NWOBHM history so Diamond Head it is Zep.

That's interesting, didn't pay much attention to the lyrics even though I knew her backstory. I'll definitely be coming back to this one. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
I could dig a lot of what was going on here as individual tracks, but as an hour and half long album, it's too much. However, if one or two of these songs would be used in a set by a competent DJ, then they're going to sound great.
So many good choices on that chart. When did you first hear "For You" Babyblue? That was one of the first City Pop records I heard a couple of years ago, and now I can't get enough of the genre. That's my pick Purple.

I first listened to it last year, and it blew me away pretty much immediately. "Love Talkin'" is one of the slickest funk grooves I've heard. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that although the city pop genre really intrigues me I don't think I've listened to any other city pop albums since then...if you've got any recs, I'd love to hear them. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. Lightning To The Nations by Diamond Head
I might or might've not heard this one in full format before. I was familiar with 4/7 songs though, and the other 3 were just as good. An essential NWOBHM album, and one of the most innovative and influential too. The famous Metallica cover of "Am I Evil?" is maybe the first "evil" metal song aside from Maiden stuff I've heard, and it left quite an impression on a younger me. The original is just as good, as is the rest of Lightning To The Nations. It's surprisingly jam oriented, with a lot of hard rock and blues influences and that punkish-metallic NWOBHM edge. And did I mention fantastic songwriting, riffs and rhythm section? Because it has that too. 8 or 8.5/10
As for the history: the band had notoriously terrible management, that's mostly the reason why they aren't (or weren't) as popular as Priest, Saxon, Def Leppard etc. They (or their management) opted to self-release a few singles on their own "Happy Face Records" in 1979, after turning down several high-profile recording companies which were at the time signing all other major NWOBHM bands. The studio where they recorded their debut was trash (not thrash though), they sold the album without a band name or album/song titles on the sleeve for a cheap price, on demand. The sleeve was also fully white, that's why it was known as "White Album", or "Lightning to the Nations" after the opening track. However the album got to one of the Sounds metal magazine editors, who was floored and wrote an article which brought the band to the limelight (kind of). It was a few years too late, but hey, at least it happened just in time for Bay Area thrash guys to hear it.
