Still really like this one but not the cream of the crop. Some excellent songs on here, regardless.

I'm more than okay with this album but I don't think it will ever crack my R.E.M top 5. It's consistently good across the record but I don't really LOVE any single track, which is unusual on any R.E.M. album for me.
I tried the reverb free remix version on the anniversary edition (how the producer always wanted the album to sound, apparently). I thought it was kinda boring though as it made it all sound very much carbon-copy R.E.M.
Fun fact: the band was inspired by the reverb heavy guitar sound of britpoppers Echobelly when they made this record.

Ah, that was the reverb! Thanks, I was wondering what made this album so punchy. I've just listened to the remix album with no reverb: clearly not as good!
