Love it to death! I was soooo obsessed with The Cure in the 80s. This whole chart might be The Cure!!!
Hahaha!!! I was trying to put it together, but honestly I was only thinking about it for 2 seconds and realized itโs almost surely the cure knowing how important and special they are to you. Iโm sure to revisit it. Itโs amazing. Personally have lived with and repeatedly listened to Group Sex, Dirty Mind and Peter Gabriel III so many times, itโll be awhile before I put it in my top 3. On second thought itโs pretty close to surpassing Peter Gabrielโs amazing 1980 album - that one is also due a revisit. Remember it being stellar. _________________ -Ryan
Setting: There was no way to expect this. Not in 1980. Three Imaginary Boys was a brilliant and massively creative album in the realm of punk. Not only that, but clearly they could write songs. Boys Donโt Cry, Killing an Arab and 10:15 Saturday Night are all massive punk singles. So if you were paying attention, you knew they had the potential to be players. Robert Smith had other ideas. And ripped up yesterday and started anew. He conjured an atmosphere that at the time was only rivaled by Joy Division (who just may get a shout out here soon. What do you think? ๐ค )
The Listen: This album still blows my mind this many years later. The minor keys. The world building. One of those albums that brings me to literal tears because it's so brilliant. The Cure would make other great albums. But, this was the initial unveiling of Robert Smith's Extended Universe. And I'd say it's better than Iron Man! ๐
Verdict: There is no way in hell that this isn't making the cut! A no brainer.
Grade: ๐๐๐๐๐ (Stealing this from Mercury! Because I like it! That's how art works, people! lol)

Peter Gabriel III doesn't really get the respect it deserves. It's such a masterstroke. His other albums are good, but something about that one is so insanely perfect. Seventeen Seconds is also next level genius. Ranking perfect pieces of art is silly. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com

Totally! Lots of things are silly though. In fact the sillier sometimes the better. I mean what could be sillier than grown men playing D&D? Or video games? Or becoming obsessed with cartoon worlds such as GOT, LOTR & MCU? Or even "high art" worlds such as Twin Peaks. But, it's GREAT to geek out over all this shit! Become stupidly enthusiastic and gush and fawn & just be excited to connect to others. And my absolute favorite bar none thing to geek out over is lists of perfect albums. Especially from the 80s! lol
Anyways, just got back from a camping trip with my two kids. With is really silly when you think about it. I chose to leave my warm, nice house to sleep on the cold ground with just a nylon fabric between me and the elements. In April! That's beyond silly! That's idiotic! And we had a blast. Hiking barefoot though the Indiana dunes. Roasting s'mores over the fire. Meeting other stupid people and having a few beers. Best couple of days ever even if I did have to race to the car each morning and blast the heat just to get my internal core temperature back up to the realm of the living.
Anyways! Next up will be my absolute favorite band from Middle School! The band I would scribble on notebooks and my trusty Trapper Keeper more than any other. Any takers? Someone must have a guess.
Setting: It didnโt take very long. Maiden were just that much better than everybody else. And it was bloody obvious right from the beginning, my friends. 1980 was the year that the New Wave Of British Metal (NWOBHM) took the metal world by storm. It boasted seminal releases from Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Saxon (x2!),Judas Priest and Motorhead. (That's a shitload of important albums! I almost feel that one of these SIX ( ๐ ) albums just has to make the list too. Donโt you?! ๐ค ) But the best of them all, even at this stage, was Maiden with this almost unbelievably confident and assured debut.
The Listen: Again, the most startling aspect on hearing this again is their maturity and confidence. Almost impossible to believe that this is their debut. Like The Cure, they create an atmosphere that is unrivaled. โRemember Tomorrowโ and โStrange Worldโ being the most obvious examples.
Verdict: This is bloody simple ainโt it! Throw it on the pyre, boys and be done with it. We got ourselves another keeper!
Setting: The 70s were good to McCartney. Whether it was playing to the masses with "Silly Love Songs" with Wings or stealing the hearts of indie rock boys like me with McCartney and Ram. (Both Ram and McCartney would be on the short list for induction into my 1970s Chart if I did a project like this for the 70s.) With Wings calling it quits, McCartney once more retreated into the studio by his lonesome and kicked out this novel album. Can he once again conjure the magic of McCartney or Ram?
The Listen: You better believe it. Unfortunately, what we have here is a spectacular, dare I say luminescent, first side. It's the reason this album gets brought up so much and makes so many critic's top ten lists. It's fantastic hearing McCartney synthesize recent musical trends into his songs and do it so effortlessly and organically. If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and check out "Temporary Secretary." Hysterical and addicting. Me & my kids are hooked. BUT, the second side is more befitting to one of those bonus discs you get in those deluxe CD repackages. The ones you're all excited to delve into for your favorite album, and then (rather quickly) kind of forget about it because it's mostly a boring slog. "I already worked all day," you exclaim!
Verdict. If only the magic of the first side had been duplicated! Still a killer EP! The year's best EP, I'd say.

loving the reviews and the format you've created. Still never listened to maiden's debut nor Killers or that McCartney album. Cracks me up seeing the devil emojis next to a mccartney record lol. Anyway i'm bad for not listening to killers and their debut. I know early on they have that [pre-dickinson nearly punk rock swag and dirtiness which may be just what I need to truly love finally a maiden album like I love half a dozen Priest. I may check them out soon, but right now I'm on a very different adventure through the 15 or so albums Ichiko Aoba has released since 2010. 5 albums in and I have loved every one. what a badass she is. But alas i digress. I love your diary and that is the fundamental reason for me coming in here and typing lol. _________________ -Ryan

Cool. Checking her out rn. Have a lot of paperwork to catch up on and this sounds like a great soundtrack for getting some work done.
Yeah. You really need to check out the first two Maiden albums. Their best stuff imo. I've always thought of Killers being a notch above their debut, but they're actually pretty equal. Can't go wrong with either one. Both are better than British Steel! ๐ (And I really like British Steel!)

Nice! Which Aoba album did you listen to?
Also yeah British Steel I'm not a huge fan of. But its good. Almost every other peak era Judas Priest album I prefer over British Steel. _________________ -Ryan
