Going to play some solo Beatles and Beatles compilations released from end of '71 onwards. I've played Plastic Ono Band / Imagine / All things etc so many times recently.
So starting with this from December 1971.
This got absolutely thrashed by the critics and the public on release. but I have always loved it.
Like Ram before it, it is FUN. Thats all. Its Macca trying to find his feet and self confidence after being outlawed by The Klein Gang and for being blamed for the split.
even though that was Joko [They are one as John said many times] but was too cowardly to come out and say it in 1969 due to big ยฃยฃยฃ's on a new contract. [Imagine no possessions !!!!!].
I totally think Macca was right for legally bringing them to an end. George showed his true selves [Spiritual / Biggest house, loads of cars etc / Shag your mates wife / Your mate shagging your wife / Hare Krishna etc.]. John admitted he was hypocrite with his Love & Peace & Try to bury your best friend for 10 Years cos' you have a new wife. Ringo just went with John because he was the hardest, and like he did as a Teddy Boy, just hung at the back of the gang drinking.
Back to the album. Like I said it is fun. The sound of a man very much in love with family life and not scared to show it. He was the one who found his soul mate who stood beside him at all times. And boy did she get some shit. Nothing could divide them, and to be honest I think the others were jealous. All three ex- Beatles commented negatively on his releases up to 1973, but lets be honest. We all knew Macca would come through in the end. This is just the start.
I love all the songs. No album before or after sounds like this. Some might say Thank God, but who wants to listen to Band On The Run or Imagine all the time. This is originality in its basic form. A band trying to gel together and record. This was recorded in 3 days and sounds like it.
In the 2010/2020s we pay 100s of ยฃยฃยฃยฃ for box sets of demo's and Outtakes, drooling to hear 60 seconds of studio jam. Well, that's what this is. basically demo's for the new band. The trouble was, as ever, Macca was ahead of the game. He was doing it before anybody else. {Pete Townshend was possibly next]. The trouble was there was no main album to accompany the demo's so it got slaughtered.
The box set of Wild Life gives the whole picture from the 60 seconds of jamming to rough mixes, and singles etc. Ram was also heavily criticized when released. Now its a 5 star album.
This should be re-evaluated with the benefit of hindsight. And remember that word....FUN
Listen and smile, cringe, laugh and enjoy. Do the Mumbo and Bip Bop Baby...who wants to be cool!.
