Just personal speculation, but I could see Earl dropping a surprise album soon. The title "Sick!" is floating around. New track is solid. He can still wrap words around the beat better than anyone else right now, maybe ever. Little less lo-fi this time around, but still very Earl-y. Really technical stuff sounding like butter.

Aside from one (somehow obligatory) overwrought ballad (“To be Loved”), this is a blistering stuff.

That's the only song I've heard so far 🤣 (kinda... I mean, I got to around the 3m mark and got bored...). I'm not sure I'll give the album a spin, but I'll check your recs. Thought the tracklisting looked super Winehouse-esque.

Sadly, I could see “To be Loved” being one of the more popular songs on the album. It’s a laboured attempt at doing“Someone Like You” again ( which was already one of Adele’s worst songs IMO).

Yeah, there’s definitely some Winehouse going on (as usual) but also a strong sense of 60s and 70s Soul, smokey Jazz vocal, Motown and Doo Wop (that thing!) Sure, Winehouse drew on most of the above as well, but I’m reminded of earlier artists more on this album compared to Adele’s previous work. As I said before, Marvin springs to mind and also Lauryn Hill. Though “Can I get it” is a pure Max Martin/ Shellback pop banger. I am surprised this track has not garnered more attention. Seems like the obvious big hitter to me, but shucks what do I know?

Tick, Tick... BOOM! (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film) by Original Cast

Maybe not the best place to post this but I think if you have a passion for music you need to watch this movie

In a year that's uncommonly overstuffed with musicals (four courtesy of Miranda alone), that's the standout for me. I think it was very well done. I haven't written a review for it or anything, but it gets a thumbs up from me. Garfield will win an Oscar one day for something hopefully. If the GG's go ahead this year, he'll win that at least.

November's stuffed. Other recent 2021 highlights—

GOOFO by Little Wings

I think BEA knows this, but I'm quite fond of this guy. Folk-sy singer/songwriter stuff. Always worth hearing what he's putting out. This is an (allegedly) improvised album recorded on a beach. Has a great Kenny Rogers cover too.

_____ by Sadness

Bedroom shoegaze. A little treble heavy, and if there was just this heavier bass boost around the entire project it would really be ace. I still think what's here is a strong project, well worth a listen, but it just needed a more Shields-esque mix to push it over the top.

2013-2021 Seoul by Pal Hwang Dan

And this is a new output from Chinabot. A bit more structured synthpop than their usual catalogue, but just as bold. Melancholic, and somehow warm and cold at the same time. The record's a little long (I think it's technically a comp?), but well worth giving a spin.

As you know the Brilliant Adventure box set by David Bowie was just released. And of that box, Disc 8 is in fact the previously unreleased album Toy, all with songs he penned in the 60s, which Bowie planned to release round 2001-2002 but never did.
I know this is a bit against the BEA rules but who would be in favour in including this as a separate album with release date as of today?
News is that an expanded edition would be released in january 2022 but why not already see it now as a separate album.

some new albums I been listening too

The Mantra by Killah Priest & Shroom

Killah Priest has not left off the gas the past couple years. I think he has released 5 albums this year alone, and they're all above average. However I think this is his best on the year and a top hip-hop project on the year, period. This one is 100% boom bap as opposed to his drumless albums that have been turning heads like 'Rocket To Nebula' or 'Summer End Cafe'. Highly recommended to those who love old-school east coast hip-hop. Personally I've been blasting 'Boss King' in the whip regularly, Inspectah Deck goes in on that track and the beat is fucking dope.

Send Return by Rampa / Adam Port / &Me

Some lowkey and chill deep house coming out of Germany. Not much to say but it's definitely one of my favorite house projects of the year.

9 Airs by Leif

Leif got a lot more attention from their 2019 album 'Loom Dream', but fans of that shouldn't sleep on this newest record. Great ambient and downtempo that taps into tribal and natural soundscapes. Worth a listen if you're into this kinda stuff.

The Other Realm by DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ

The Makin' Magick II Album by DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ

DJ Sabrina quietly dropped two new long ass house albums a few days ago. I've heard them both while working but need to relisten again before commenting too much since they're so long. I can definitely recommend them both though. 'The Other Realm' taps quite a bit into hip-house which is cool to hear from her, while 'Makin Magick 2' sounded a lot more nostalgic and lush similar to her first 'Makin Magick' album. DJ Sabrina is just such a dope DJ and her style always puts me in a great mood.

Personally Id say lets wait till we get an official release of Toy as a separate album. Though it seems a few critics have reviewed Toy as though its already now a distinct album so I see where you are coming from.

Madison by Sloppy Jane

Listened through this one a couple of weeks ago and I needed time to sit with it. Really, I think this album is fucking brilliant. The last great record of 2021, and seems to be a serious sleeper. This is an album of murder ballads, modern in their writing but old school in their production. They even recorded the record in a West Virginian cave 200 ft underground (they carried a piano down in there) and recorded acoustically for the haunting sounds. Symphonic pieces interspersed with folk tunes interspersed with indie, this album is a real gem. It's hugely ambitious and hits hard, one of the best debuts of the year. Released on Saddest Factory, Phoebe Bridgers' new label.

The Marfa Tapes by Jack Ingram / Miranda Lambert / Jon Randall

It seems like country fans are kind of scarce on BEA, but I think this is an album a lot of people might like. It's really unique: three artists trading songs around a campfire, recorded outside in 2020 - a much more intriguing option than the zoom recording most artists were forced into.
