Hey everyone!

I'm a keen language learner - though I've never stuck with something long enough to become fluent, something I'm hoping to change. I'm learning German at the moment and wondering what music you would recommend that is sung in German. I've already added Kraftwerk's German albums to the list, as well as some Rammstein and Einsturzende Neubauten.

I like movies too, so wouldn't be averse to film recommendations. However, this is the music forum, so that's the main point.

If you also like learning new languages, what are some of your go-to albums to immerse yourself? Doesn't have to be German, could be any language. Would love to discuss the idea of learning a language partially through listening to music in that language.

peter gabriel's fourth album, also known as security, was released in both english and german. i've never tried to learn german, but i've picked up a few words and phrases by listening to the german version.

Huh, cool! I think I found a copy of Gabriel III (Melt) in German in a record store once as well. That's my favourite Gabriel album, I actually haven't heard Security. See if I can find it on streaming (the German version, I mean).

The nice thing about Die Toten Hosen is that if you buy the actual albums, they nearly always have lyric sheets. Also, they're not a screamo band or anything like that, the singer is fairly conventional style-wise so you can usually make out the lyrics. (I'm not really a big fan of theirs, though.)

I guess it would be more useful to have German versions of songs you already know the English words to (like "In My Room" below), but that's really just a matter of Googling, seems to me. Anyway, good luck with all that!

Yes, I did think of the German version of Heroes that plays at the end of Jojo Rabbit. Apparently the pronunciation isn't fantastic, but decent. As craola pointed out, there's those last two s/t Peter Gabriel records - and they have different mixes to the English language versions, too, so that should be interesting. And I know The Beatles recorded German versions of a couple of tracks: I Want to Hold Your Hand (Komme, Gib Mir Deine Hand) and She Loves You (Sie Liebt Dich). So I might check those ones out as well.

It's funny, after I read this I thought "oh I listen to a lot of German musicians" and the more I thought about it, most German and Austrian music I listen to is either instrumental or sung mostly in English Laughing

You picked a few good ones though. Kraftwerk is probably the best bet since they sing much of their music in both German and English. I find Einsturzende Neubauten a bit difficult to understand, but I'm by no means a fluent German speaker. Here are some other recommendations:

Nena (probably familiar, has recorded the same songs in German and English)
D.A.F.
Dagmar Krause (I don't love her, but she has an interesting voice and also records songs in both German and English)
AnnenMayKantereit (I think their enunciation is helpful)
If I think of others, I'll add more. The only other recommendation is German-language operas by Mozart and Wagner. That said, I find opera lyrics very difficult to understand, even in English. Your ears might be more fine-tuned than mine though, so I'll add that here.

For movies, Good Bye Lenin! is a favorite of mine.

I'll also add a caveat to all this that if you enjoy learning languages, there's a good chance that your German is already better than mine. I was attempting to learn German for about 3 years but never got anywhere close to fluency: my conversational skills and comprehension are very insufficient. Best I can do is sing along with "Das Model" and some other bits of Die Mensch-Maschine.
