To me, the best cool album hasn't been released yet, but it is on the way.

Were you wanting to say something to me? Because if you did, your part of the message is missing.

God bless you always!!!

Its very much dependent on the moment and the people you are with but I've always thought of Colossal Youth by Young Marble Giants as a cool album.

The kid has undeniable vocal talent, but isn't this just a little bit too retro for the "cool" tag? He sounds like he just walked out of Sun Studio as if the last 70 years never even happened.

I suppose retro rockabilly-tinged gospel remains cool in some quarters, though. I'm not criticizing! 😎

I just added it to the database for you. You can go ahead and rate the tracks that are already out and save them to your favorites.

All that I can tell you is that bringing back the old sounds is his every intention. The 1:18:13 mark of this clip is when he starts talking about his influences and when he gets to the subject of Elvis he says that he is wanting his form of music to have a presence again.

P.S. The beginning of the chat is at the 59:33 mark of the clip.

Hard pass.

This may be the widest off-topic jump I have ever seen.

Probably, but to be fair, the whole thread has a really vague and unfocused premise. If it had been something like "the best album for which the vocals are all totally emotionless" or "the album that most reliably makes you fall asleep without it intending to," that might have the kind of specificity required to avoid those "I don't know what the thread is about so here's my favorite album ATM"-type posts.

Also, and this is just my personal opinion, another problem with the "best cool album" thread concept is that it's unfair to albums recorded during the download and streaming eras. The point of buying and having "cool" albums, given that you might not listen to them all that often, is to simply display them so that you stake out a personal aesthetic for people (such as potential girlfriends/boyfriends, freshman-dorm roommates, easily-impressible rich hipsters, etc.) to see at a time when you know they'll be judging you. So you might want to ensure that your copy of The Velvet Underground or Meet the Residents or Never Mind the Bollocks is strategically placed in your listening room in case someone like that walks in there, for example. The problem with something like the new Mason Ramsey album is that he's largely unknown, the album is brand-new, and the artwork isn't especially eye-grabbing in the first place. So even if you have the physical artifact, for most people it doesn't signify anything so it's probably not helping you with your personal coolness factor (at least not yet; maybe in a year or two, who knows. At least then he'll be over 18 years old).

Either way though, this is the streaming era, so even if you do have the physical artifact, is anyone going to care? Music is still important to people, but in terms of conveying an aesthetic, or signifying coolness, I'd say it's far less useful and effective than it was in the past. Its unfortunate to be sure, tragic even, but for a lot of people these days it's just yet another thing you have on your phone.

i'm a little unclear on the assignment. what is "cool" to you? are you just asking about obscure good albums?

As I pointed out earlier in this thread, I agree with craola. There should have been more of an explanation. Each individual may consider their own personal favorite albums as the best "cool" album if there isn't a more specific explanation as to exactly what is meant by "cool".
