Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston, passed away today in a hospice where she was receiving treatment for Alzheimer's disease. She was 91. Cissy sang backup for Elvis, Aretha and many others. That high note that you hear in the background on Aretha's "Ain't No Way" is Cissy. Cissy was a member of the The Sweet Inspirations. She had the original version of "Midnight Train to Georgia", which would have been called "Midnight Plane to Houston", if not for Cissy.
Can't believe I'm reading this, but Ka reportedly passed away a few days ago. Terrible news. He's had a phenomenal run of albums since 2013, and was probably one of the best rappers... ever? At least one of mine anyway. Shocked, and genuinely saddened this is the end of the road for his output. A phenomenal talent, and a rapper I hope future rappers look up to and become influenced by. Tasteful, sophisticated, mature, poetic, innovative, understated— turned grit into something really beautiful and literary. Deserves to be remembered as one of the best lyricists in hip-hop history. Not to mention the dude was just... a real guy. 25-year career as a firefighter. His latest album came out in August.
RIP. I'm going to miss this guy.

In remembrance of Paul Di'Anno who passed yesterday. Paul was Iron Maiden's lead vocalist on their first two albums. I love Maiden's first two albums MORE than anything that came next, and Paul Di'Anno and his punk background is a big reason why. I wrote up this review of their first album a couple of years back when I was ranking the albums of 1980.
Setting: It didn’t take very long. Maiden were just that much better than everybody else. And it was bloody obvious right from the beginning, my friends. 1980 was the year that the New Wave Of British Metal (NWOBHM) took the metal world by storm. It boasted seminal releases from Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Saxon (x2!), Judas Priest and Motorhead. (That's a shitload of important albums! I almost feel that one of these SIX ( Twisted Evil ) albums just has to make the list too. Don’t you?! Think ) But the best of them all, even at this stage, was Maiden with this almost unbelievably confident and assured debut.
The Listen: Again, the most startling aspect on hearing this again is their maturity and confidence. Almost impossible to believe that this is their debut. Like The Cure, they create an atmosphere that is unrivaled. “Remember Tomorrow” and “Strange World” being the most obvious examples.
Verdict: This is bloody simple ain’t it! Throw it on the pyre, boys and be down with it. We got ourselves another keeper!
RIP David Lynch. It's not exactly out of nowhere as he was suffering from emphysema, but still incredibly sad. A brilliant mind, an all-time great filmmaker. _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
I wouldn't say this was 'out of the blue'. That photo is suggestive. He was old, a chain-smoker, and had emphysema so bad, that he couldn't leave his house. That is, until the recent fire in his L.A. neighborhood forced him to evacuate. It makes you wonder if the horrible air quality he was inhaling had something to do with it. Anyway, it's a sad loss, but his films, and their unique style will live on. R.I.P.
