My discoveries per year

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Free The Bees by The Bees (UK)
This album completely feels like a sixties album with all kinds of possible references like The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Animals aso. It has its good moments like especially on Horsemen but also many weaker ones. The album climbs from the 67th to the 54th rank of 2004.

A Question Of Temperature by Chris Stamey Experience
Chris Stamey helped by Yo La Tengo and you can hear that on many tracks (including some good covers) but especially on the long McCauley Street (Let's Go Downtown) which goes into some kind of jamming/droning mode, something in which YLT is good at. Apart from a few minor moments this is a really good one and it enters at the 38th rank.

Body Of Song by Bob Mould
While listening to his new album (he is also touring in Belgium with this new album) which is again very good I'm listening to this album of 2005 of his which is perceived as not one of his best. But I must say, while the predecessor Modulate is really not good this is maybe an album of highs and lows, it is still a very enjoyable Bob Mould album from one of my all-time favorite artists. The best track is Beating Heart The Prize. And the album goes from the 65th to the 37th rank of 2005.

Discover A Lovelier You by Pernice Brothers
Already the 6th album of this band I'm discovering and perhaps one of the most underrated bands ever. This album is maybe just a bit less good than the five others but lovely nevertheless and good for the 42nd rank.

The Trials Of Van Occupanther by Midlake
And again one of those very underrated albums (by me) that didn't immediately click but does now. In fact this is a great album which both has its roots in the seventies (Eagles, CSN, ...) because of the harmonies and the guitars and in the nineties (Radiohead). It's indeed a very good album with a story to tell where for me Head Home is the highlights but especially at the start of the album there are many (while there are some less good tracks near the end which lower the average). But makes a whopping jump from the 64th to the 25th rank of the year.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring by Eddy Current Suppression Ring
a punk album from a band which seems to have forgotten that punk was something of the seventies but who cares. Australian so the link with a more rowdy version with The Saints is quickly made but there are many more references and it leads to a very energetic album I do like. So it enters my year chart at the 22nd rank.

First an album I already own/know:

Long Road Out Of Eden by Eagles
A double album and definitely not as good as their earlier classics. There are a few good tracks here like How Long, Busy Being Fabulous, Waiting In The Weeds and the title track but this would have been a better album as a single album. Nevertheless deserves a place in my year chart and goes from the 48th to the 36th rank.

Hospital Music by Matthew Good
Is it a solo artist? Is it a band? In any case I had never heard of them and maybe I should have because I like it. I suppose I hit the jackpot with this album because it was made at the top (but I think I should rather say the bottom) of an emotional rollercoaster of the guy and the title of the album and the music itself is a token of that. The music is at the same time heavy and emotional and in fact the only flaw is the cover of Daniel Johnston's True Love Will Find You In The End which is not the best you will find. But I will definitely try to dig in the other albums and this one enters my year chart at the 25th rank.

District Line by Bob Mould
Another album where Bob still is keen on his vocoder, sometime in a way that doesn't destroy the song, like on the first two tracks, sometimes where it does: Shelter Me. But at the same time this album also contains a few of the best Bob Mould tracks like Again and Again, Return to Dust and especially the ballad The Silence Between Us. The album goes from the 33rd to the 16th rank of 2008.

Smoking Kills by The Disciplines
A fairly average album from a Norwegian band were it not for the singer on this album: Ken Stringfellow from The Posies. It's also the tracks where his singing comes out the best that transport this album from an average to a good album so it enters at the 40th rank.

Life And Times by Bob Mould
To finish the nillie period of Bob Mould where he had developed some love of the vocoder, there is this record where he still uses the vocoder on a few tracks (with especially the bad Lifetime. But the majority contains good old Bob Mould tracks, both slower songs and real rockers and in fact this album has become one of his better latter day ones (the first three remain the real classics) and the standouts are many where especially the slow burning title track excels. I appreciated it that much that it went from the 30th to the 4th rank.
After this album Bob Mould there isn't a trace of that vocoder any more buy maybe also his songwriting became a more average. In any case I'm still looking forward to another concert I will attend of him in Belgium in november.

Elmwood by Drive Like Maria
To be frank, this is a rip-off of QOTSA, but a good rip-off because this album contains some real good rockers. And the album becomes even more special because of the fact that Janis Ian joins in on a few songs like on the outstanding Die A Little More. So the album enters my year chart at the 51st rank of 2009.

Heavy Metal Fruit by Motorpsycho
This Norwegian band is still my favorite progrock band especially as they include a lot of rock in their prog. But they do all lots of stuff here: sometimes jazz sometimes beautiful lyrical passages (a bit of Pink Floyd even) as especially on the long closing track. They have made all kinds of albums but if you'd like to discover their proggy side, this is the place. And the album moves up from the 32nd to the 26th rank.

Ironbound by Overkill
just good old Overkill without any compromises and especially Bring Me The Night is extremely fast. Good for the 23rd rank in my year chart.

Angles by The Strokes
In fact this is a fairly boring, a terrible thing to say to a band who made Is This It. Of course there are some Ok tracks like the two opening tracks but overall this is not that boisterous band they used to be. Still Ok for my year chart but the album decreases from the 58th to the 59th rank.

Disaster Tourist by Spotlight Kid
Lush like shoegaze is back with this album. Nothing very new but they do it in a great way so why not let this album enter at the 43rd rank.

Evans The Death by Evans The Death
An album that doesn't age well in my opinion. When I first heard it in 2012 I liked it very much but now I find it's fairly average and goes from the 36th to the 37th rank.

The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy by Nada Surf
Although the guitars are a bit more potent than on Lucky, this is still more powerpop than powerrock. But in average very good powerpop as many of the tracks on this album prove so it goes to the 30th rank on my year chart.

Cerulean Salt by Waxahatchee
I must admit that on their latest album, Waxahatchee is losing my interest a bit but not so on this earlier album of theirs which sounds really good and perfectly fits in the indie vibe of the nineties. It nevertheless goes from the 20th to the 36th rank.

Sky Burial by Inter Arma
Controversial opinion: to me Inter Arma is one of the most interesting/best, if not the most interesting/best bands of the post 2010 metal bands. Normally I don't like the grunting part of metal not very much but here it's completely fitting. The music of this album is a combination of nearly everything, from Pink Floyd on The Long Road Home (I admit doesn't sound very metal) to sludge metal to black metal to Young Gods style industrial to well everything else. But most importantly they know how to creation to create a very dangerous sounding tension and they certainly know how to release it. The best tracks are the long closer title song and especially which I already wrote starts in a Pink Floydian way but ends in an absolutely intense black metal finale. Did I already mention that the guitars really shine here as well. I already discovered some of their albums but definitely have to sort out the rest as well and this enters my year chart at the 30th rank.
