A couple misses, but also a couple of home runs. Machu Picchu and Two Kinds Of Happiness are simply awesome. I like it a lot overall. Pretty heavy 80's vibe.
Well I like it.. Glad they didn't just do "more of the same", but experimented a bit (and not too much).. My main problem w/ First Impressions was the length, so I'm glad they made a shorter album (like their first two) this time, suits their music (genre)... Highlights: Machu Picchu, Under Cover of Darkness, Life is Simple in the Moonlight (,...). I don't know why some people (P4K) don't like it.
After I heard the first 5 songs I was floored. I was sure we were in for The Strokes second masterpiece album. Then the second half of it starts and it brings it down a notch.
Under the Cover of Darkness is the best Strokes song.
Maccu Pichu is so damn good.
I like the new sound of what comes after for a couple songs. And then they are out of ideas. Damn
Again, this band is so good that nothing here is truly bad. It's just so frustrating because I want to make them out to be a master band and I just can't do it. They are really really good though.
The highlights are extreme highs. This is the 3rd best Strokes album.

This album starts off so well but... it lacks consistency, as well as catchiness, after the first two songs. Sure, there are plenty of good moments here and there, but the overall result is fairly haphazard. Casablancas' vocals sometimes feel fairly distanced from the rest of the music, which takes on all sorts of different styles, to various degrees of success.
Overall, although the strokes are a great band and have many great musical moments across the record, they fail to come anywhere close to the tight, strong, lean, catchy songs of their debut. Sure, there's more variety, but variety has never been the Strokes' strong suit.

A definite improvement on 'First Impressions...' and most of the songs on this album are great. Of course it isn't as good as 'Is This It', but who expected it to be? It is probably my 3rd favourite Strokes album, because I am a great fan of the under-rated 'Room on Fire'; but 'Angles' is a great album and there are some cracking songs on it, my favourite being 'Taken For A Fool'.
