Simply Red - The Right Thing

Link

Simply Red track number 3, this one falling in the middle of the two, not Mick Hucknall's funkiest entry, but a solid catchy pop tune nonetheless (despite the scathing quote regarding 'white soul' the Wiki page for this...).

A top 10 hit in several countries, the first single off their second album, it's a good solid track, but won't make a dent on the higher echelons, coming in at 129.

250 done, many many more to go...

Erasure - Sometimes

Link

This one's alright, I really some of Erasure's stuff, this is more middle of the road synth pop for me, they've definitely got better hits.

A decent hit for them though, hit number one in South Africa and Spain, it's the first single of their second album, doesn't get you moving as much as other synth stuff, but definitely better than a lot of what I've heard also.

Still going strong now Erasure, having put out 19 albums in a 40 year career, not bad.

Placing it at 151.

Robbie Nevil - C'est la Vie

Link

Serious pop/R&B banger here, real indicative of what was to come in the 90's I feel, maybe Nevil just came along too early, who knows...

Anyway, great stuff, just real catchy and fun and got plenty going to hook you in, well worthy of a spot in the top 50 @ 35.

This Nevil's biggest hit by some distance, coming in as the first single on his debut album, within a few years he'd dropped way back though, his third and final album in 1991 struggling to chart, not all bad though, he moved down a road of writing/producing for other artists and then TV, which seems to have served him well.

Great tune anyway.

Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing

Link

I feel like everyone has come across this by now, the second Hot Chocolate track to feature in the series and easily the most famous I feel.

Originally released in 1975, it was remixed in 1987 which ultimately led to a chart resurgence and hence it's appearance now, will be interested to see if it shows up again in 1997 on the back of the Full Monty, when it charted again apparently (no idea yet if any song has featured more than once, I'm not looking ahead...).

Really catchy and good fun, probably would have cracked the top 50 at an earlier stage, but definitely in the top 100, coming in at 56.

Hot Chocolate still going these albeit without frontman Errol Brown who passed back in 2015.

The Blow Monkeys - It Doesn't Have to be This Way

Link

Literally never heard of this or these guys but it appears to have gotten big on the back of the Polica Academy movies.

It's fairly solid pop rock, not loving it by any means but toe tapping at the time, falls in at the middle of the pack in 154.

Solid but just doesn't kick on.

The Housemartins - Caravan of Love

Link

Another Housemartins track I like a lot and have discussed the band here before.

Whilst only a cover of an earlier funk track, this became a huge hit and ended up as Christmas number one the UK, meaning it still gets tonnes of play time years later.

An a cappella track, it's ultimately quite different from the other Housemartins stuff, but there's something soothing about it nonetheless.

A new addition to the top 50, entering at 16, funnily enough it pushes out another Housemartins track though.

A reasonably solid cover version of a song originally done by Bread, I've definitely heard it somewhere before, but I also liked it more than I expected it to be honest.

UB40 - Rat in Mi Kitchen

Link

A 6th UB40 track so far, so up there as one of the better ones for sure, it's definitely got some catchiness to it.

Probably on a par with Sing Our Own Song, if not slightly ahead, both coming off the same album.

A top 10 hit in a handful of countries, it's another decent entry by UB40, coming in just ahead of Sing Our Own Song, at 100.

That album art however is awful.

Haha, thanks, it's crazy I know, being doing this not far off a year now and only on Now 9, it's interesting though and not too tough as it's only song a day.

Gap Band - Big Fun

Link

Another very unusual choice, it's funky-ish, but it's not doing a massive amount for me in all honesty.

I've definitely heard Gap Band songs I've enjoyed in the past, definitely showed up somewhere in one of the GTA games I feel (San Andreas?)

This was the first track on their 10th album, obviously called Gap Band 8 for some reason, the album wasn't a huge success nor was this particular track so it's inclusion here confuses me for sure.

Placing it at 186.
