Moving away from the Red Rooster gigs for a moments, I saw Songhoy Blues at The Assembly Hall in Islington (London) last night and they were phenominal.
I was really in the mood for a bop last night and from the start of the set they delivered in spades. I can't see anyone standing still when these guys are on form and boy, were they on form last night.
Great East African Blues played superbly. The support also helped. N'famady Kouyate was also great. more on that later

Going back to Red Rooster on this one, starting off the festival on Thursday night were The Vagaband, an Americana six piece from the UK.
Throwing in a bit of country, prog (yeh, I know) and funk, they were the ideal band to get the proceedings off to a rollicking start.

Another Thursday night act at Red Rooster was De Wolff. A Psychedelic blues / southern rock explosion of a band from the Netherlands.
Consisting of three brothers (I think), they blew the stage apart with their incendiary musicianship.
They paly like there's too little time to fit everything in so the songs merge into a phenomenal musical assault of the senses, If you get the chance, you have to go and see these guys. They'll blow you away

WOW!!!!!!!!!
What a way to end the first night of Red Rooster with Samantha Fish on the main stage.
Opened with a fabulous rendition of MC5's Kick Out The Jams and just kept the intensity going from there.
Great performer and musician, also got the one thing that a lot of great musicians don't have. stage presence. Her band were top notch and she clearly had a whale of a time. superb night

N'Famady Kouyate was support from Songhoy Blues (see above), and whereas a lot of support acts don't warrant a mention, N'Famady does.
Hailing from Guinea, he is a balafon and guitar player. Great musician on both and so energetic. A great opening act for the brilliant Songhoy's

Saw Warren Haynes, The Gov't Mule lead playing With his band at the Assembly Hall in Islington last night. Incredibly warm night and we were up on the balcony (first time I'm been yup there at this venue), which made it even more oppressive. SO HOT! As was the gig.
Excellent gig with the band playing ABB and Gov't Mule tracks as well as Warren's own compositions and veering off into a bit of reggae and quite a lot of jazz, which I loved.
A little freer to experiment with his own band was a bonus. Great gig.

Saw UB40 live last night at the Boogietown festival. Well, the robin Campbell version of the band anyway.
Originating from Birmingham, I’d seen them play a few times as the original band and love them. This version was, on the whole, a little underwhelming and rather lacking in energy. Something the original version never did.
Nice hearing the early songs again though
