I would have given my left arm if I could have had a career like Sly Stone. But it is totally impossible to even wish to have the genius of Brian Wilson. He was too much above us all.

RIP Brian Wilson Sad

That 60s run was insane. Some of the best music... ever. Imagine a world without Pet Sounds or The Smile Sessions. I'm very glad he was here with us.

Been away on vacation for a while, what did I miss?

The death of Brian Wilson. Well, I didn't miss it. I heard about it of course. 2024 was a very rough year for Brian. The simultaneous death of his wife, and his diagnosis of dementia was heartbreaking to hear. Not to be morbid, but I had the feeling he wasn't gonna live much longer when I heard that news last year. At least his suffering is over now.

Pet Sounds was a life-changer for the music industry. Brian broke contemporary standards of musical compositions and mixing never done before in pop music. His lyrics became more personal and downbeat. It was a total rejection of what the world expected from The Beach Boys, who were mostly famous for producing fun summer time hits up until that point. Needless to say, it paid off. Pet Sounds became a crowning achievement in album production, creating a legacy that lived on for generations. Including my generation. Pet Sounds was also a life-changer for me, although I first listened to it some 40 years later. I was left in awe. It immediately entered the upper ranks of my favorite albums, and it's never left. It was so moving. It opened my eyes and ears. I felt like I had an understanding with Brian Wilson. All I could say after I listened to Pet Sounds over and over again in my teens, was "Thank you, Brian." And now that he's gone, I'll add this: Thank you, Brian. You will be missed. God only knows what we'd be without you.

Lou Christie has passed away. He's best known for his #1 hit Lightnin' Strikes, which has an amazing falsetto vocal (but terrible lyrics).

But he also recorded this beautiful album that should be much better known. It used to be ranked as the #1 bubblegum album of all time on RYM, but now it's tagged as baroque pop & sunshine pop. Check it out:

Paint America Love by Lou Christie Sacco

And he wrote for The Tammys, including their best-known song:

Just had to break this news to my teenage daughter. Ozzy's her favorite artist by quite a bit. Sad

RIP Ozzy.

Losing some icons lately. I had a grim feeling Ozzy knew his time was running up... he'd been doing a lot of farewell-esque activities of late. Legend though. There's a chance all metal music and sub-genres influenced/encompassed stems from Black Sabbath— punk, grunge, post-punk, etc— of which, might do a binge of their early albums today.... those first four really are a slice of music history. As dour as a note this is, I mean it in a positive way— the fact the original line-up were all still kicking in 2025 to do a reunion concert earlier this month is rare for that generation— makes you remember how young they all were when they made their debut 55 years ago. You look at those early photos of the band and need to remind yourself they're only 21-22 ish... despite looking like '25 40-year-olds. Eras are eras though, and I'm next to certain we'll see a band like them again— those days are just done—

In lieu of a sad face, Ozzy may have preferred Twisted Evil

Devastated at the passing of Ozzy.

I hail from Birmingham and was just the right age in 1970 to be getting into serious music and the Sabb were the soundtrack to my youth and that of my friends.

Despite coming from the “wrong part of Brum” they hailed from Aston whereas I’m a birmingham fan (football rivalry for those that don’t understand) they were the soundtrack to our live and of our city. We didn’t appreciate hat Ozzy and the rest of the band were creating a whole new genre of music, we just loved what they were doing.

Saw them live a few times. The Birmingham gigs are so special.
