"Heroes" (1977) by David Bowie |
Could a similar thing be happening with apostrophes?
I can't post Hell's Ditch by The Pogues or The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's... for example

hi, not sure if anyone else has had this same issue or if it's on my end, but on my home page all the albums of the year/decades/charts of the day are missing?

The carousel is no longer displayed when you're logged in as didn't think people were using it, it can be restored if that's not the case _________________ Bluesky ยท Facebook ยท Spotify ยท X

I actually like to check that info. And I think it's a much more attractive intro to new users (and to existing ones) to have that at the top of the first page above the "What's New" info. My thinking is that if I'm going to an album site, the first thing I want to see is albums.
Also, the Album Of The Day seems to be nowhere except as a forum post. IMO, that's still a really good thing to see on page one...even if it doesn't generate the desired forum conversation. I may not have a lot to say about the AOTD (which is probably a good thing), but personally, I like that we have one. I also use the cover of BEA's AOTD as the picture of a song group I have on FB. As well, probably the most sharable thing from BEA to social media is the AOTD. I try to share that when I do see it. I think it has value far beyond being a forum topic. In fact, I think it would be interesting to have AOTD with something like "Check it out here. What do you think of this album? Let us know HERE" with a link to the comment section for that album. Maybe some would put their comments on that page over having to be on a message board (which I know quite a few people don't like).
My 2 cents. ๐ _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Thanks for feedback, I'll reinstate it. AOTD will be retired soon in favour of an anniversary post, so removed it from the carousel in preparation for doing that (anniversaries already exist elsewhere on the page and didn't want to duplicate the content). Agree about adding more hooks, will definitely try and make the anniversary posts more interesting with more hooks to them. _________________ Bluesky ยท Facebook ยท Spotify ยท X

This might be just me, and if it is, that's cool. But for me, the anniversaries are completely meaningless. I really don't care if an album was released 20 years go, or if it was 15 years ago today. The only reasons why I care about release dates at all is for year charts and putting discographies in chronological order. I know some people do care, and that's fine. But it's not all of us. To me, having an AOTD is much more meaningful and interesting. I think it's cool that we have one, and I would be bummed if it goes away. If the AOTD posts on the forum leave, fine...but it would be great to still have one. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

The AotDs would generate more discussion if they weren't limited to albums that are popular, or the Top 2000, or whatever it is โย if it were completely random, you'd get lots of albums that nobody has ever even heard of, including some really bad ones. When all the albums are generally considered "good," people don't want to say anything bad about them for fear of offending people, since most people like those albums or at least respect them. So you can only say something good about them, which gets boring after a while, or nothing at all.
Admittedly, if you did this you'd have the problem of the AotD occasionally being something really disgusting or offensive, like Impaled's The Dead Shall Dead Remain LP. So you'd probably want to have a way to prevent that from happening, but that probably means extra work flagging stuff like that.

At risk of hijacking to talk about AoTD but my $0.02 is that AoTD is only meaningful on this website, it's not grounded in the real world. For people externally, why is a random album being picked out? Anniversaries at least have a reason to be listed on social media. There used to be a call to action like 'discuss this here' etc, but why would people do that and I understand why this wouldn't be engaging, so this was taken off and the posts now just stand alone.
In terms of albums being too well known to get feedback, there's been plenty of AoTDs for less popular albums without much feedback. The site is 20 years old, AoTD has been running for a very long time and very probably it has become a bit stale. Really nothing much will change with anniversary posts, there'll still be a daily album to talk about, but the label will be different. That Impaled artwork looks like how I feel after a day in the trenches. _________________ Bluesky ยท Facebook ยท Spotify ยท X

I can see it being newsworthy that maybe an album in the top 100 has hit a milestone year...10, 25, 30, 50 years. Sure. I would be absolutely stunned to see one person rising up to celebrate that an album like Meteora by Linkin Park was released 23 years ago today. And if they did, I would be amazed if the celebration was anything more than posting the album cover and a blurb that says "released 23 years ago today". And nothing more. What else is there to say about that anniversary? Not a whole lot. That's what already happens with those. It's pretty rare for an album to be celebrated here for that.
Sure, You might see AOTD as being stale. You've also been seeing it every day for well over a decade. Probably closer to two. Not everyone is here every day, and not everyone sees it every day. For someone who has never been here before, it's brand new. It's something that the other sites DON'T do. And at least the potential conversation isn't being steered towards the anniversary of its release, which is over after 5 words. What else am I going to say after the acknowledgement that Meteora came out 23 years ago? The conversation was directed to be about the release date, but there's really nothing to say about that. When you go to RYM for the first time, what do you see first? 3 album anniversaries. Why would people want to talk more about albums simply because they were released __ years ago today? I just don't get it. And do we really want to be like RYM?
AOTD is a nice little feature. And it's unique to BEA.
Anyway. Sorry to have made this about that. I'll shut up now.
