Yo yo my favorite rapper Captain Beefheart, maaan. You'on wanna start no beef with Beefheart, he's got beef in 'is heart against society.

In case anyone wasn't aware, I think about a year or so ago they made Trout Mask Replica a free download on Bandcamp. My immediate assumption was that they wanted more people to use samples from it in in their own musical works, since having the files makes that a fair bit easier, but there are probably lots of other possible explanations, like "they just got tired of having to sell it."

The fact thatโ€ฆ

Donโ€™t take the โ€œhateโ€ too seriouslyโ€ฆ Iโ€™m poking fun at them yes, but also both sides of the argument, simultaneously satirical and seriousโ€ฆ

Yes, I think theyโ€™re very overrated, and the ratings below ARE what I really think, however I do rate them a little bit better than Scaruffi and do think he (kind of) overstates some of his points even if I feel they are more accurate than not โ€” even where he exaggerates or over-generalizes, I still get whatโ€™s โ€œcorrectโ€ about it and where he is coming from, especially in relation to the rather widespread assertions that they are โ€œclearly the greatest band (artists, etc) of all timeโ€ โ€” a very ridiculous notion in my view (sorry here comes added dose of elitismโ€ฆ) if one consumes and compares with the greatest music/art of all time

Note: ratings subject to change. Iโ€™ll probably go through a portion, maybe all of the early ones, in two rounds to fine tuneโ€ฆ It usually takes me a few Beatles albums to get acclimated to rating, especially their largely superficial early fluff with more and more (hopefully?) accuracy. The energy and melody is of course pretty much its (only) attraction as most of it amounts to very very little โ€œemotional, conceptual, thematic contentโ€ behind that (they are by and large pointless little songs, where almost โ€œnothingโ€ of note is experienced, saying literally โ€œnothingโ€ about anything that isnโ€™t a dime a dozen in every single art form, any given year, from almost any random collection of mainstream or chart topping artists one could name โ€” just minor, silly variations of โ€” basically โ€” a very superficial layer of energy and melody about love when you get right down to it โ€” virtually no creative insight, depth, experiential content aboutโ€ฆ) besides all of it being about almost the same god damn thing over and over again ๐Ÿซข This dichotomy (sorta entertaining, occasionally mildly arresting at its very best, cheery energy vs more or less โ€œemptyโ€ content) offers very little import, significance, โ€œcontentโ€ to grasp and to observe, to listen to, with a good sense of a finite rating โ€” basically because there is so little there. In a sense, these very low ratings can be a similar phenomena as the higher ratings (an advancement towards an infinitude of meaning, emotional, conceptual, creative depth) however it is in reverse the lower you go towards an โ€œinfinitudeโ€ of empty, pointless, superficial emotions, concepts, creativity, minimal significance, minimal depth, increasingly inconsequential โ€ฆ etc.

So in a way they can be similarly difficult to get a qualitative grip on. Maybe these are really just masterpieces on the order of The Divine Comedy after all? ๐Ÿคฅ

With you currently rating album tracks, I'm curious how you'd rate the songs on one of the all time hip hop greats like Marshall Mathers LP or It Takes a Nation of Millions or something,

Thanks - Im more focused on other genres/subgenres but I still may get to those this round

Track rating differentials would be tough with both, especially Takes a Nation

Understandable. I'm always unsure which track from It Takes a Nation is "definitively" the best. Maybe Bring the Noise or Louder Than a Bomb. Scaruffi specifically highlights She Watch Channel Zero in some old list but no idea why.

Me as well. Last I revisited (maybe 5 years ago?) I recall the quality being very consistently similar throughout with none standing way above or below the rest. All 3 of those occurred to me as among its best if I had to choose but I would have to revisit to be sure of any of it, including whether or not my upgrade back then to 8.1 would still hold

It truly is one of a kind. Hard to say if any hip hop album will top it, though some have gotten fairly close.

As far as The Marshall Mathers LP goes, Kim is definitely the standout, followed by probably Stan.

No. As far as MMLP goes, I think Public Service Announcement 2000, Kill You, Stan, the Paul skit, Who Knew, the Steve Berman skit, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Remember Me, I'm Back, Marshall Mathers, the Ken Kaniff skit ( ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜Ž ), Drug Ballad, Amityville, Bitch Please 2, Kim, Under The Influence and Criminal are the standouts, followed by probably The Kids.

@DommeDamian That's true every song on the album is the best on the album lol

@AfterHours Just listened to some of Public Enemy again and if I had to make a guess, this would be my very very rough ranking. It's amazing how every song (even the short ones) though is pretty expressive in and of itself and contributes to the overall greatness of the album

1. Bring the Noise
2. Night of the Living Baseheads
3. Louder Than a Bomb
4. Rebel Without a Pause
5. Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos
6. Party for Your Right to Fight
7. She Watch Channel Zero?!
8. Terminator X to the Edge of Panic
9. Show Em Whatcha Got
10. Don't Believe the Hype
11. Cold Lampin with Flavor
12. Prophets of Rage
13. Caught, Can We Get a Witness?
14. Mind Terrorist
15. Security of the First World
16. Countdown to Armageddon (which is still a perfect intro for the album that flows great into Bring the Noise)
