A couple of observations about Freewheelin’. First, how does Girl from the North Country - a relatively trivial love song more or less plagiarized from an English folk ballad - warrant the same score as the savage and poetic Masters of War and Blowin in the Wind?
Second, it’s interesting to note that it doesn’t feel like Scaruffi’s take on this album is too different from other critics, despite the wildly different ratings. Other critics give it 5 stars, seeing it as a great and revolutionary album. Scaruffi rates it 5/10, seeing it as an album with three great and revolutionary songs surrounded by junk. Two different ways of looking at the same thing.
This does not apply for Revolver, A Rush of Blood to the Head, or probably any other album Scaruffi rates 5/10 that is lauded by critics: a critic who loves A Rush of Blood to the Head has a serious disagreement with Scaruffi. Yet somehow it doesn’t feel like a critic giving Freewheelin 5 stars contradicts Scaruffi very much

It’s very possible I’ve slightly overrated GFNC and/or underrated MofW. Its main quality is Dylan’s extraordinary sincerity/emotional honesty of his idiosyncratic voice that is so totally “him” and especially humane here, though does not necessarily have additional depth/insight perhaps, such as the duality of characterization of Blowin (struck between “youth” and “elderly”, trading vantage points, concerned at the future yet fluctuated by reminiscing about days long gone (his voice trades “characterizations”), which could be expressively likened to a subtly microcosmic “sum” of the early to mid 60s / Vietnam era (between upcoming youth getting abandoned by the establishment, Kennedy on the verge of getting assassinated, and confronting the stages towards Vietnam war, while also the elderly that went through WW2 seeing the same things from a now more regretful POV, reminiscing, pained, nostalgic)

Re different 5s

I think Scaruffi just respects Dylan more and doesn’t feel the need to point out flawed works as much. I also have a hunch he respects his sincerity and effort even in failure, where he employs almost nothing but his voice, harmonica and light guitar and gets good mileage out of it, perhaps more than an effort like Revolver which employs much more, gets lauded to high heaven, and doesn’t get as much mileage out of it all as it should

Just a curiosity … decided to put this together for no other reason than that… not sure how dedicatedly I’ll work on it into the future beyond just as something that was on my mind for the last day or two and thought it might be interesting …

Best of Rock… Jazz… Classical… Film… Paintings… Architecture… Sculpture… Literature…!!! Combined List

Note: several selections, especially certain genres, are shakier in their ratings/rankings than others. In general by category, the order of accuracy are as (roughly) follows, most accurate first: (1) Rock; (2) Film; (3); Jazz; (4) Painting; (5) Classical; (6) Achitecture; (7) Sculpture; (8) Literature

Rock: always revisiting, making updates, never feel it is completely accurate, though it is probably the most reliable overall

Film: largely reliable, very similar as the above for Rock, the point of differential between their reliability being that it is just not as feasible to revisit and double check cinema as frequently as Rock (or most other music). The point in its favor however, is that visual observation tends to be less “abstract” and therefore tends to be quicker to grasp. However, it also can combine ALL genres plus its own visual filmic language, so can ALSO be just as “complex” if not more in some cases, than the others (less the more complex strata of Classical)

Jazz: similar to Rock, but has been revisited far less over the last decade or so. I need to go through most of the essential works again before this can be considered as accurate as Rock overall

Classical: ratings/rankings are very hit and miss as regards my confidence and what can be considered reliable. Symphonies are perhaps the most reliable on average. Of any Classical artist, Beethoven’s ratings are probably the closest to being the most completely reliable across his works (of those that Ive listed), though there are still some on there I am less sure of. Opera and Modern works, above all, and Vocal works (especially large scale) need multiple more revisits than Ive given them up to this point and should be taken with several grains of salt. Plus, my list is still missing hundreds of selections, many of them from several years back, that Ive just never gotten around to rating and ranking.

Paintings/Architecture/Sculpture: lots of recent revisits which helps, but nevertheless Ive only seen a portion of these in person, which makes ratings more of an estimate than other Arts even if Ive done as much as I can to get as close and as accurately observant to them all as feasible … plus, requires a lot of study, more so (in general) the farther the work is removed from the present, and there is still a ton left to learn to get these all as accurate as possible

Literature: way, way, way behind … should be taken with a grain of salt. These are the loosest estimates of all, with several I haven’t read in 20+ years. Most of the 8.8s and above are probably in relatively close proximity to their ratings, as well as some below, with The Divine Comedy receiving the most extensive recent revisit, but besides probably that, almost any of the others can’t be relied upon too strictly … even in those I haven’t read in forever (long before these ratings), Ive done my best to estimate their current rating “by memory” … There is also just a LOT of great works I have yet to read at all, which hinders the accuracy of the ratings in itself (limited history and experience in this Art to make proper comparisons and qualitative context with, relative to the others)

To help emphasize my recent re-upgrade of Tarkovksy’s Nostalghia (1983) to 8.8+, I am posting this excellent analysis, which so happens to back up my own (from the early 2010s) in numerous ways not to mention some additional points, so therefore and naturally I very much endorse it.

I sincerely doubt its author is or was ever familiar with my Nostalghia analysis (unless maybe he was a listology.com user, which is the only place it ever got even somewhat more than minimal attention), so I do feel he likely drew many of his conclusions himself from his own well earned understanding of Tarkovsky’s art and Tarkovsky’s own comments and writings about such.

Plus, instead of just a written analysis, this 4 part video series offers superb visual examples from the film itself as well as many other sources. Highly recommended and very well put together by its author “Plan-Sequence”.
