Not sure how long it would take for Scaruffi to add more ratings, but this is a good opportunity for you to begin updating your own and see how Scaruffi's ratings eventually compare.
I don’t have any more to update than are already featured on the Literature link provided (each regular Top 10+ list post).
So far I’m 2 for 2 I guess on Dostoyevsky (C and P, Bro K) — 3 for 3 if we count my brief 8.9 rating of The Idiot (didn’t keep it there though) — but even if these closely match Scaruffi they are still very loose on my end as they are from 20-some odd years ago and remain rough estimates regardless in my own mind
There will surely be ones I get “wrong” as he continues to update (and getting them all the same is not a goal anyway… comparisons are a curiosity and can surely get me to revisit or rethink a work but aren’t the “end in itself”) … If for anything that my Lit ratings are largely based on memory from years back in almost every case — not recent enough for more confidence — and even if they were there is not all that realistic way for me to match his because his familiarity with Lit just vastly vastly outweighs my own
I think the ones that are closer to filling out the bio page will perhaps be sooner than others, like Kafka, maybe Joyce … would love to see Shakespeare, Dante, Eliot, Goethe…
Part of what I meant by updating the ratings was revisiting the works themselves, and reading more to add new ratings. The idea of predicting/guessing Scaruffi's ratings was tongue-in-cheek anyway, as a potential incentive to begin building your Literature list 😜
In any case I highly doubt he'll finally bring out a 10/10 rating even if it's for the Commedia. I do wonder if there exists any artwork he has considered rating a full 10.
I’m tracking… never say never… might at least inspire to, first off, include some I was more hesitant with (like the aforementioned The Idiot and possibly some others…)
And yes, there is a chance Scaruffi’s updates and synopses could appeal to me enough to finally get me rolling on Lit a bit more for newer entries as well
It wouldn’t completely shock me if there are just “no 10s” but I think Dante has probably the most realistic, logical shot of the few works I can think of that might have any shot at all. Beethoven 9th could be the other but it probably falls just outside of that range. I would say Michelangelo Sistine but he doesn’t appear to hold it or him in as high regard as I do, at least per the old lists and very limited and inconclusive evidence at hand at this time. I might say Angkor Wat based on monument/architecture rankings and what he says about it, but I don’t personally see how that could be above Dante’s or Beethoven 9th despite how incredible it is and even if he might place it above Michelangelo. If Bosch’s Garden is truly above all of Michelangelo’s Sistine (for him) than I suppose that’s not totally implausible, but 9.3+ seems more realistic for that one. Wouldn’t totally shock me if one of Wagners or Bachs epochal achievements suddenly became “the” Classical choice above Beethoven 9th (probably not though). Maybe Hamlet or Goethe Faust or Homer?
Again, if anything can do it, I think Dante’s DC fits the criteria probably better than any other while also achieving a seemingly impossible apex and efficiency of perfection. _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings
Best of Rock… Jazz… Classical… Film… Paintings… Architecture… Sculpture… Literature…!!! Combined List
Note: several selections, especially certain genres, are shakier in their ratings/rankings than others. In general by category, the order of accuracy are as (roughly) follows, most accurate first: (1) Rock; (2) Film; (3); Jazz; (4) Painting; (5) Classical; (6) Achitecture; (7) Sculpture; (8) Literature
Rock: always revisiting, making updates, never feel it is completely accurate, though it is probably the most reliable overall
Film: largely reliable, very similar as the above for Rock, the point of differential between their reliability being that it is just not as feasible to revisit and double check cinema as frequently as Rock (or most other music). The point in its favor however, is that visual observation tends to be less “abstract” and therefore tends to be quicker to grasp. However, it also can combine ALL genres plus its own visual filmic language, so can ALSO be just as “complex” if not more in some cases, than the others (less the more complex strata of Classical)
Jazz: similar to Rock, but has been revisited far less over the last decade or so. I need to go through most of the essential works again before this can be considered as accurate as Rock overall
Classical: ratings/rankings are very hit and miss as regards my confidence and what can be considered reliable. Symphonies are perhaps the most reliable on average. Of any Classical artist, Beethoven’s ratings are probably the closest to being the most completely reliable across his works (of those that Ive listed), though there are still some on there I am less sure of. Opera and Modern works, above all, and Vocal works (especially large scale) need multiple more revisits than Ive given them up to this point and should be taken with several grains of salt. Plus, my list is still missing hundreds of selections, many of them from several years back, that Ive just never gotten around to rating and ranking.
Paintings/Architecture/Sculpture: lots of recent revisits which helps, but nevertheless Ive only seen a portion of these in person, which makes ratings more of an estimate than other Arts even if Ive done as much as I can to get as close and as accurately observant to them all as feasible … plus, requires a lot of study, more so (in general) the farther the work is removed from the present, and there is still a ton left to learn to get these all as accurate as possible
Literature: way, way, way behind … should be taken with a grain of salt. These are the loosest estimates of all, with several I haven’t read in 20+ years. Most of the 8.8s and above are probably in relatively close proximity to their ratings, as well as some below, with The Divine Comedy receiving the most extensive recent revisit, but besides probably that, almost any of the others can’t be relied upon too strictly … even in those I haven’t read in forever (long before these ratings), Ive done my best to estimate their current rating “by memory” … There is also just a LOT of great works I have yet to read at all, which hinders the accuracy of the ratings in itself (limited history and experience in this Art to make proper comparisons and qualitative context with, relative to the others)

Very old (15+ years). Like The Idiot and King Lear I finally decided to add them even though they are even less certain estimates than the others and it goes against my longtime MO (and is a bit hypocritical to my own criteria page…) of asserting ratings/rankings before I am more ready to. I used to try to never do that, any art form … but in recent years I got a bit looser on this rule I guess…
But… as the kids say these days and in the ever present and monolithic, lingual spirit of Shakespeare:
Whatevs, ye old mutha fuckas
To beeyotch or not to beeyotch is the guest of thy mind
Guessed at the request of ye questions, leavith thy impressions as to them are my own
To be done with or disown, in thy mouth they do foam-meant to no one but the imagination to roam-mance into stone
So then take this all down to the wicked dryest tail-end bone
except to accept that mistakes may be made for the stakes are not owned
The but of this joke is the head that under stands alone
New 9/10 just dropped…
AfterHours straddles the border between hip hop and Shakespeare, yet in a Dantesque journey through lingual-pun-ishment Inferno … one is left to wonder if this was the hell we were in for had we ever encountered his lost Hip Hop masterpiece — legend has it titled “Gangsta Bitch Casserole” _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings
NOTE: ALL ratings/rankings are estimates, and certainly not final. While there is a decent chance most of them are not far off of what they should be, I am a ways from being able to rate/rank them in the proper context of many other greats/masterpieces of Literature like with rating/ranking, say, Rock or Film (with their respective histories and genres). My estimated ratings for these are (so far) much more based on a combination of my familiarity with them plus the qualitative context of my other ratings/rankings across other arts (but again, not nearly so much for Literature as the closer and more accurate point of comparison)

Which works are you likely to revisit/read first when you get around to making the Literature ratings more accurate (as opposed to estimating from memory)?
Which works are you likely to revisit/read first when you get around to making the Literature ratings more accurate (as opposed to estimating from memory)?
I am thinking maybe The Trial (maybe higher rating?) …and because my (far) better half gets the nod even above Scaruffi (sometimes…) 😜 … she is nudging me towards Master and the Margarita (one I’m itching to check out again anyway)
Besides that, potentially various Poetry such as Yeats’ The Tower and Eliot and others
I did “partially” revisit (skim, hone in on excerpts, reviewed claims/analysis about it) the Langston Hughes I added a after not having read it in about 25 years — to get an expedited sense and estimate of its rating (but not final of course)

How about you?
One potential obstacle in evaluating The Trial might be that there's no definitive text since Kafka didn't indicate the sequence for most of the chapters. Would love to know your thoughts on the "Critical Edition" vs Max Brod's original edited text.
