Albums with Wrong Covers

Sometimes the intial run of an album is small, perhaps because of the lack of anticipated sales or limited financial support. Sometimes, those same albums are released again with slighly different tack listings, cover art or label and then become successful. In those cases, the new cover art may be more apporpriate than the original cover which very few people ever saw or purchased. Historians and collectors might be interested in knowing what the original cover looked like but I am not sure what the general public would glean from same.

Hi, we've now corrected the Glenn Miller entry. Indeed, finding the correct artwork is a bit of a problem for older albums. The problem is that the CD artwork is a lot more common-place online than the original vinyl artwork (because online music stores are selling CDs and therefore the artwork is readily available in that format).

We have to automate parts of this site, including fetching album artwork, track-listings etc (to make the website more manageable). Unfortunately, our automated routines are not intelligent enough to tell the difference between the orginal vinyl and CD artwork.

The Glenn Miller issue was not Vinyl vs CD but a change in the title, the "automatic parts" should not change charts by correcting 'His Original Recordings' to 'The Original Recordings', which are two different albums.

When I first looked at the overall chart, I noticed 6 incorrect covers on the first page (first ten) that are 60%. We fixed the cover of the Banana Album by Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground And Nico, which leaves 50% on page 1. Covers are artwork and for me, it is the second important aspect of an album, after the music of course. The first ten albums of the overall chart figure also in lists of best album covers of all time. However, one cover version showing here on page one, a reissue, is in lists of the worst album covers of all time while the original is one of the best covers of all time. There are still many issues, track listings and covers, I have written down about 200 titles so far. Most track-list issues are missing tracks; even by removing bonus tracks of reissues, the ones to add for the originals are far more resulting in many more MP3 to sell. ๐Ÿ˜

I do understand that the site's "automatic parts" add CD bonus tracks but why do they leave out so many tracks?

In addition, what I do not understand if it's automatic, why does often clicking BEA's wrong cover reveals the original at Amazon?

That was the case with the Banana Album on page 1 and there are two more, Nevermind (disturbing white writing destroying the aesthetic aspect of the artwork) and London Calling (ugly CD part on the left). Click both covers at BEA to find the originals at Amazon.

The cover of London Calling, saluting the King, is a tribute to Elvis Presley, see entry 39 and 40 at Rolling Stones greatest album covers.

For the last 3 wrong covers on page one, 3 (use Wikipedia's cover, BEA's cover is in a worst list) and 35 in the greatest album link. Only the cover of 'OK Computer' is in fact difficult to correct (I will look for the original on the internet during weekend). The blue/grey cover looks dark almost boring if the eyes would not lead to the right edge on the original with the dark blue square (part cut off) and the aeroplane with two red lines (cut off). The cut down CD cover is IMO not cover art.

You will find more wrong covers at BEA looking through these 100 greatest and we should talk about art censorship at BEA with regard to entry 7 and 51, which I last heard of in the last century by the German Nazi regime and the US record industry.

(We have now corrected the issues that you have just reported).

Thank you for the Glenn Miller image and correcting the song's title for Newport 1958. However, why did you change at the same time the image of Newport 1958 to the later Japanese version of the record? You can see the New Columbia logo used by Sony on the top left of the Newport 1958 cover here at BEA now. To insert the logo on the artwork changed also the title's writing in size and that logo did not even exist in 1958. Before becoming CBS and Sony it read 'Columbia' on records. Columbia US, CBS, always acted worldwide exception to Japan. Therefore, covers differ with regard to the logo between the US and Japan. The US stereo cover still uses the old writing of 'Columbia' for reprints in 2009 to be 100% original as asked by the customer.

See the difference, original US Mono, original and in reprint 2009 US stereo and Japanese version.

Noted your post, I will respond when I get sufficient time. I must admit, I do not know what you are on about with one of your quotes:

The source that we use to automatically populate track-listings does not provide anything to let us know what is (or isn't) a bonus track, so sometimes they are listed. I don't think this is such a big crime and we will always correct an incorrect listing if it is reported.

Now corrected both these covers.

Sorry Glenn, your previous post was not very clear and so I swapped the image. You originally said:

In between there was this 1985 version and for memory, the 1994 CD version we had at BEA. For example, using the CD cover for some CD listeners would imply the release year of 1994. Release year 1994 for a 1958 recording... :{

.. so I changed the image thinking you were saying the BEA version was wrong.

I know you'll hate me saying this, but the two versions of the artwork that we used here (before and after your post) are pretty much the same and would be recognisable by the vast majority of visitors as representing that album. The same with Nirvana - Nevermind (which we have now changed). I don't think it is such a heinous crime if the cover is almost identical to the original. To compare this to the Nazi regime is extremely insulting. In NO WAY is this is comparable. Thank you.

I agree with you albummaster. The album art needs only be representative of the album so that when a member sees it he can say "I have that one" or "I should get that one." As in art, there are often more than one variation of the same work. I collect music, not album covers.

Right cover but messed up in the database.
Dรฉjร  Vu is listed in The Top 100 Albums by VH1 (2001) without the artist (Crosby, et al). It is in the database at 378 but fails to list its appearance on the VH1 chart. In fact, it isn't shown as listed in any "recognized" chart!

For a moment it appeared to be fixed but now is broken. The Top 100 Albums by VH1 (2001) now shows "There are no albums matching this criteria." Same for Dรฉjร  Vu.

A to Z shows two separate groups Crosby, Stills & Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Are they really different groups? Seems like we had a similar discussion over The Velvet Underground and The Velvet Underground and Nico. There we merge the two files.

The Top 100 Albums by VH1 (2001) seems to be working again. But Dรฉjร  Vu is still broken.
