I know there's a similar thread buried in here somewhere but can't be arsed to dig it up. So I guess to clarify, right now do you have any particular bands/albums/genres that's currently dominating your listening, or perhaps looking into a specific set of recs from either a user or publication list or whatever, or just any weird central theme that seems to dominate your current listening repertoire?

Right now I seem to be interested in these American-gothic/dark-country-ish acts from the late 90's, mainly David Eugenio Edwards work with both 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand, Jay Munly and Black Heart Procession (though I guess the last isn't really too country-influenced). I also have a habit of focusing on a specific year when Im looking for a variety of different recs, and have now started with the late 90s (right now '97) to pick up where I left off.

Just 2014 albums, I guess. I mean, I keep going back to old favourites and stuff I see people listening to or recommending around the forum, but I reckon 70 or 80 percent of all my listening recently has been made up of albums released this year. I've got something like 420 of them on my computer, which is kind of ridiculous. I don't have the time to listen to all the albums I'm stockpiling. But I've had a fair go, reckon I've got through about 170 or so, which puts me on course for roughly the same amount of 2013 albums I heard last year, but more and more pile up every day. It's silly, but it's probably fair to call it an obsession. It kind of frightens me that there are people on here who have almost certainly heard more than that.

I've been really into dark wave, Gothic, dark ambient ... or anything that has sort of a dark/depressing/ugly theme going on.

So, Black Tape for a Blue Girl/ Dead Can Dance/ Swans/ Black Heart Procession/ Nico/ Lycia/ Lightwave/ Demdike Stare/ Carla Bozulich.

Before their, mostly, awful The Seer.

You should check out This Disgrace by Art of Burning Water, sort of like Swans meet Melvins in a barbecue pit.

I don't know what you have/haven't heard but for Dark ambient things maybe try:

Zoat Aon - Star Autopsy
elegi - Sistereis
current 93 - Nature Unveiled
Formication - Pieces for a Condemned Piano
Lustmord - the place where the black stars hang
2nd half of trist's hin-fort (1st half is ambient black metal)
Coil - Musick to play in the Dark
time machines - Time Machines

Some of those (coil, current 93) may also have some loosely comparable attitudes to Swans on their other albums. For stuff similar to noisy 80's swans Godflesh and Neurosis would be the obvious picks.

I also have a custom chart of dark/ugly music and comparable stuff
