Yeah. Which do you love more? Which moves you more? Are they really all that different?
I always think of HC punk being just simpler, faster, more adrenalized punk primarily from the US. (Exceptions galore) And I think of Post Punk as being more intellectual, colder, more calculated and actually also a more intense and hardcore version of punk primarily from the UK. (also exceptions galore) I love both in their own ways.
And what about those bands that fall right in the middle like The Minutemen? Or those bands that are considered as mostly Post Punk in a way yet are American AND were actually part of the initial punk movement like Television? What are the time constraints in these movements? Cuz there are also bands like Interpol for Post Punk and Refused for Hardcore punk to take into account as well...
Anyway, that's all.
I wrote this and had this idea whilst listening to Gang Of Four's "Entertainment". So now you know what inspired this conversation starter. _________________ -Ryan
For me I'm much more of a Hardcore punk guy myself. It was one of my first loves. Also I'm a huge American Indie 80s underground fan - and a lot of my favorite bands of that I'll came out of the American Hardcore scene such as Minutemen, Mission Of Burma, The Replacements, etc. so, def HC.
I haven't fully indulged myself into both genres, but I will say that Post-Punk has more of a soft spot for me. It's bands such as Joy Division, Television and Wire have produced some of the best material of the 70s. But if stuff like The Replacements are considered hardcore punk then I wouldn't hesitate to try some other examples out. _________________

Their first albums certainly are, but Let It Be and Tim and Pleased To meet me are definitely not hardcore. _________________ -Ryan
SST should just be its own genre. Their bands really didn't fit nicely into any specific sound. ( ex. Meat Puppets, The Minutemen, Saccharine Trust). Plus, their bands evolved at an a FREAKISHLY accelerated rate from any humble hardcore beginnings. Someone was definitely spiking the water!!!
From your "polls", I'd say Dead Kennedys, Wire, Joy Division, This Nation's Saving Grace and (GI). So I'm basically torn. I think I've listened to more post, but both genres have their share of breathtaking record tbh. There's a hardcore album in my top 10 actually, and I'm pretty sure either JD or TV (or both?) are in my top 20.
But yeah, listen to the Dicks peeps.
I think I agree that both genres are harsher takes on punk (though in very different ways), and I'd first recommend basic punk rock to people wanting to get into either of them.
And what about new wave? It's about as fantastic as the other two. I mean, The The exist.
I haven't listened to much post-hardcore, though I really like what I've listened to so far (Unwound, Faraquet, that's all I think).
sorta prefer post-hardcore to post-punk it; hawrd to get into certain post punk records but post hardcore, I have clicked with quite a few. it's too hard but I voted for hardcore punk fuck it in an angsty mood
