I don't really like Going Mobile, but other than that, this shit is excellent. Definitely my favourite Who album, though I haven't listened to half their stuff in like a decade. I kind of like the demo of Getting in Tune better than the album version. All the demos from this are great, worth checking out.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again are pretty good, but I could never understand the hype about this album, or really The Who in general... any pointers on what I'm missing?

If I recall correctly, everyone and their mother credits the Who with laying the groundwork for heavy metal, and Led Zeppelin made it official.

I don't know, though. I could never grasp genre origins too well.

Definitely a high point for The Who and one of my personal all time favourites. I love all these songs, but Behind Blue Eyes is my personal favourite.

For me, it's the pure energy. Even when they're doing a slower song (e.g. "Behind Blue Eyes"), there's energy to it, like they're just waiting to explode, and they often do, thanks in part, I believe, to Keith Moon, who's just a madman.

The purity of Roger Daltry's voice always gets me too, he's got such a smooth, excellent voice that suits both melodically-focused songs (see: "Getting In Tune", "Behind Blue Eyes") and powerful songs. I mean, that scream in "Won't Get Fooled Again", I know it's been kind of made into a caricature because of the whole CSI: Miami thing, but that scream gives me goosebumps every time, it's amazing, it's so powerful.

The Who have the ability to just flat-out rock, but that's not their only schtick, they're not some AC/DC, four chord rock band. You've got the rockers, like "Going Mobile" and "Bargain", but you've got these really cool, well-composed pieces like the Terry Riley-inspired stuff on "Baba O'Riley" and the whole epic of "Won't Get Fooled Again".

It just all rocks, but it's not stupid. It's like seeing a linebacker discussing the finer points on the thematic elements of Greek antiquities. He's huge and powerful, but he's smart too.

I always thought more of LZ, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, other hard blues bands when it comes to proto-metal, but I'll keep my ears open for that in the future. I've heard arguments that albums like The Who Sell Out and Tommy helped define the concept album and inspired progressive rock bands. I also heard someone say that Who's Next was the first arena rock album. Any thoughts on those claims?

You could almost apply this same description to later bands such as Rush -- though I'd say for them "He's smart, but he's huge and powerful too". There are a handful of hard rock bands that don't reduce themselves to Neanderthal lyrics, were The Who just the first to strike that balance, or were they just one of the more well-known?

Thanks, btw, for the feedback!

I don't think I can say with certainty that The Who were the first to do that, but they're an early example, I think (maybe Deep Purple too?).

I would say Rush is a little different, while Rush can rock, they were more into the technical aspects of music, being in the whole prog movement, whereas The Who were more rooted in blues, and as time went on, they matured and began doing more intricate things. But yea, I would agree with you for the most part, I think The Who are one of the earliest examples of a band who could strike that balance.
