6th Grade, August 2005
GEORGE: Master of Puppets is such a HEAVY and GREAT album, Charlie.
ME: I dunno, I find that it gets old after a while. They just say the same thing over and over. I think Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton are a lot more fun.
GEORGE: WHAT?!?!?!?! These lyrics would CRUSH the silly baby stuff those girls are told to talk about!
9th Grade, August 2008
ME: George, you're right. This really is objectively the greatest metal album ever. I don't even know how a metal album could be better.
George: See, Charlie? That's why you have to give up on that Radio Disney crap!
Halfway Through Undergraduate Degree, August 2015
GEORGE: I'm listening to Master of Puppets. It's really great stuff.
ME: It's so BORING and CLICHE, George. I'm gonna go back to my Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton.

Actually, the album isn't bad. But it's funny how I can't think of a single serious metalhead that takes this album seriously.

It's one of those albums that got so much praise that it became overrated, but then got called overrated so much that it actually went the other way and is now UNDER-rated. _________________

Nah, I still think it's overrated. You cannot be the band with St. Anger and Lulu in your discography and call an album on the RYM top 100 "underrated".
(And just for the record, both of those albums are better than Master of Puppets)

I've often heard heavy metal compared to horror films, but bands like Metallica have never struck me that way. Where horror films elicit fear and dwell on the strange and supernatural, this kind of music feels like it's more about aggression and dominance. I suspect that's why Metallica has never resonated with me. I'm actually a little surprised I'm only ambivalent to their music, since aggressive and overbearing people tend to annoy me in person.

Strange thing: metalheads here are against Metallica, at least most of them.
Anyway, great album, altough not my favourite Metallica. I love how it keeps constantly raw.

Kind of constipated. At least it's better than the black album.

Dude, I had an obsession with Metallica in 6th and 7th grade! I had all of their studio albums on CD! I honestly thought they were the greatest band ever to walk this planet! Then I kinda grew up, lol.
This was probably my *Third favorite release by them, behind Ride The Lightning. Damage, Inc. was the ish, though.
EDIT: HOW COULD I FORGET ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL??? _________________ ...and for dessert!

Lavigne and Carlton were way more cliche and generic than this record upon it's release...

My point was, this is an album that just seems so pretentious to any seasoned metalhead (or at least most of the best metalheads I've talked to). But both before and after my short love affair with Master of Puppets, I came to the same poptimist conclusion. Unfortunately, the rockist regime made it hard for me to be confident with that in 2005.
