A pretty underrated Metallica album, I'd put it up there with Ride The Lightning

If you think this is better than St. Anger or Lulu, you are officially a rockist.

In fact, this album almost is rockism incarnate. The whole point of it is to say, "Hey, it's not new, and it's not very good, but it's hard, just like Ride the Lightning".

Not listened yet, but i will soon, as i'm going on with Metallica's discography. I recently listened to "Load" and it annoyed me a lot, but i'll give it another chance.

Song wise a return to them writing good metal songs. Yes very long, often drawn out songs, but good for the most part nonetheless.

I really loved it when it came out aside from, you know, one of the shittiest mixing jobs of all time. Not as good as Puppets or Lightning, but not anywhere near as bad as St Anger.

EDIT: And certainly not 67/100 bad as the site has it as of now.

This is easily the worst offender in the "loudness wars" (though the Raw Power reissue was quite bad) Almost unlistenable due to that. It's the mastering though eh, not the mixing. Still a good album though and the only one I'd entertain after the Black Album. Not in the same league as their 80s albums obviously.

That raw power reissue is punk incarnate. Just like with The Woods, they were able to use the artistic compression to add to the artistry of the album.

Also, if you still measure how good an album is by its dynamic range in 2015, you are very probably a rockist.

Pushing everything "into the red" on raw power is definitely fitting what the band were about, so I get that about it being a punk statement. But it just sounds like the media it's on (cd) can't cope and to me not fun. Its a very old topic granted. Still, how an album is mastered can make a big difference to your enjoyment and the raw power version I have is a let down for that reason.

I just don't think it's an excuse for an album to sound as bad as the Raw Power reissue. Calling it punk incarnate still doesn't make it listenable.

Definitely an above average album, but these days I mostly find it a sad reminder of how long it's been since they've released anything new (I don't count Lulu).
